If there is no attachment to what is obtained, then, son of good family, even if a Bodhisattva obtains something, he does not claim it as his own, does not regard it as wealth, does not accumulate it, but constantly gives it to ascetics, Brahmins, parents, friends, ministers, relatives, and in-laws, and also constantly gives himself completely, and when using it, he uses it without attachment or clinging. Even if he does not obtain anything, he does not generate a disheartened mind, nor does he become completely discouraged, because he does not regard the givers and patrons as lacking faith, and so on. Thus it is said. Emptiness is the essence of compassion. Through practice, merit becomes purified. It is said in the Sutra of the Noble Treasury of Space: For example, giving with complete purity from attachment to self, that is giving. Giving with complete purity from attachment to mine, that is giving. Giving with complete purity of motivation, that is giving. Giving with complete purity of view, that is giving. Giving with complete purity of signs, that is giving. Giving with complete purity of difference, that is giving. Giving with complete purity without expecting fruition, that is giving. Giving with complete purity of mind equal to space, that is giving. Giving through these eight doors of complete purity, that is giving. Just as space is limitless, making sentient beings limitless and then giving, that is giving. Just as space is vast and unobstructed, dedicating it to enlightenment and then giving, that is giving. Just as space has no form, giving without abiding in all forms, that is giving. Just as space has no feeling, giving while being separated from all feelings, that is giving. Just as space has no perception, giving without the entanglement of all perceptions, that is giving. Just as space is unconditioned, giving without all conditioned things, that is giving. Just as space has no characteristic of discriminating consciousness, giving without abiding in discriminating consciousness, that is giving. Just as space pervades all Buddha-fields, giving with love pervading all sentient beings, that is giving. Just as space opens up opportunities for all sentient beings, approaching all sentient beings

Giving to life is giving. Just as the sky has no attachment to "mine," so too, giving to all sentient beings, free from all mental fabrications, is giving. Just as an illusionist gives to an illusion, without discrimination, spontaneously accomplished, free from mind, intellect, and consciousness, without hope for all phenomena, thus, free from consciousness, with the essence of the nature of illusion perfectly pure, the Bodhisattva gives. Son of lineage, such giving is the complete abandonment of all afflictions of all sentient beings through the wisdom of knowledge, and the non-abandonment of all sentient beings through the wisdom of skillful means. Son of lineage, such a mind of giving, the Bodhisattva's giving, is equal to the sky. Thus it is said. In the "Noble Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra," it is also said: There is no giving that harms all sentient beings, up to and including the giving that diminishes what has been said, and the giving that despises all sentient beings as not being worthy recipients of giving. Similarly, there is no giving of complaint, no giving that harms beggars, no giving of deception and enticement, no giving of turning one's back, no giving of abandonment, no giving of contempt, no giving of not extending one's own hand. Similarly, there is no unsuitable giving, no untimely giving, no giving of poison and weapons, no giving that harms sentient beings. Thus it is said. In the "Sutra Requested by the Violent One," it says: He may even give alcohol to others, thinking, "Now is the time for the perfection of giving, now is the time to give them whatever they want, I should do this: to whomever I give alcohol, I will make them maintain mindfulness and awareness correctly in non-deluded conduct." As it is said, through alcohol, the Bodhisattva may also become desperate, and anger may increase, which will harm the gathering of sentient beings, causing others to have faith.
