Just as it appears, so is the performance of karma. Whether accumulating merit and virtue, or perfecting enlightenment, or saying there is no virtuous conduct, please listen carefully to the reasons for this. People often say that a person's lifespan is a hundred years, accumulating year by year, but it is not so. Practice is also the same as this. Thus it is said. The Blessed Mother also said: "O Subhuti, will unarisen dharmas arise, or will arisen dharmas arise?" Subhuti said: "O Shariputra, I do not wish for unarisen dharmas to arise, nor do I wish for arisen dharmas to arise." In the Holy Dharma Collection Sutra, it is also said: "Son of good family, what is called Suchness is a synonym for emptiness, and emptiness is neither born nor ceases." The Blessed One also said: "All dharmas are empty." Therefore, all dharmas are neither born nor cease. The Bodhisattva Asanga said: "Son of good family, it is just so. As it is understood, all dharmas are neither born nor cease." If the Blessed One said that all conditioned dharmas are born and cease, then from what intention did the Tathagata speak? He replied: "Son of good family, because the world abides in birth and cessation, the Tathagata, with great compassion, spoke of birth and cessation in terms of convention in order to eliminate the world and the abiding of self-grasping. In reality, no dharma is born or ceases." Again, in that same sutra, it is said: "Blessed One, the eye does not emit sound to forms, the ear to sounds, the nose to smells, the tongue to tastes, the body to tangible objects, and the mind does not emit sound to dharmas; this is the Dharma." How then does the eye not emit sound to forms? Because there is no contact. The eye does not contact forms, and so on, the ear does not contact sounds, the nose does not contact smells, the tongue does not contact tastes, the body does not contact tangible objects, and the mind does not contact dharmas. Whatever does not contact does not emit sound. Blessed One, if there is no duality, then the Dharma does not emit sound.

Venerable One, all phenomena are not dualistic, not that one does not recognize the other, not discrimination, not discrimination. They do not arise, they do not perish. They do not decrease. They do not increase. They do not cling, they do not not cling. They do not revolve in samsara. They do not completely pass beyond suffering. These do not belong to anyone. No one belongs to these. Venerable One, these phenomena are neither discouraging nor clinging. Venerable One, these phenomena neither become completely defiled nor completely purified. Venerable One, I know it thus. I understand it thus. Venerable One, if I say that I know it thus and understand it thus, that is transformed by the aggregates. Venerable One, the aggregates do not think, 'These are my transformations.' One who knows thus does not dispute with anyone. Those who do not dispute follow the Dharma of a renunciant. Those who follow the Dharma of a renunciant do not enter from anywhere, nor do they not enter. They do not join, nor do they not join. They do not go, nor do they stay, they do not decrease, nor do they increase. All is seen as the nature of Dharma. All is seen as the nature of liberation. It is seen as the very realm of Dharma. Thus, all is seen as arising, but that which arises is not truly seen. Otherwise, seeing only as names, designations, and conventions is not non-existent. That name is also a non-existent name. That designation is also a non-existent designation. That convention is also a non-existent convention. Seeing the Dharma is seeing the Buddha. Seeing the Buddha is seeing all sentient beings. Seeing all sentient beings is seeing causes and conditions. Seeing causes and conditions is seeing emptiness. Seeing emptiness is not seeing. Venerable One, not seeing all phenomena is truly seeing, so it is said. If there is no basis, how can it conventionally exist? How can it not exist? It is like mistaking a tree trunk for a person.
