I say, that is the combination of the four great elements, namely the earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the wind element. Among them, the earth element and its combination are not a source of arising. The water element and its combination are also not. The fire element and its combination are also not. The wind element and its combination are also not a source of arising for the eye. Why is that? The earth element and its combination do not closely abide in any dharma as a source of arising or to obtain a source of arising. Similarly, the interval and combination of the wind element do not closely abide in any dharma as a source of arising or to obtain a source of arising. Why is that? Those dharmas are without mind and without action, and are incapable of anything. Great King, if these dharmas are sought one by one, no source of arising for the eye is found apart from mere designations. Why is that? The earth element and its combination are empty of the earth element and its combination. The interval and combination of the wind element are empty of the wind element and its combination. How can there be combination or disturbance in those dharmas that are empty by their very nature? Since no combination or disturbance is seen in anything, how can those look at form? Thus, the source of arising for the eye is utterly empty by the very nature of the source of arising for the eye. Since it has no coming or going, neither the prior limit nor the posterior limit is seen. Since it has no nature, abiding in it is also not seen. Whatever does not exist by its very nature is neither female nor male. Whatever is neither female nor male, how can that look with pride? Great King, pride is the realm of activity of the demon. Absence of pride is the realm of activity of the Buddha. Why is that? All dharmas are free from pride. Combine it similarly. Great King, what is there between the source of arising for the ear and the source of arising for the body? It is the combination of the four great elements. Great King, thus the interval of all dharmas is, tending towards liberation, ascertained in the realm of dharma, pervaded by the sphere of space, un-establishable, without designation, unspeakable, not to be spoken. Great King, whatever the faculties are obstructed by, that is objects, etc.

Earth, that is, eye consciousness is connected to forms, therefore, forms are called the objects of the eye. Similarly, the sounds of the ear and so on are also like that. Among them, the eye consciousness being connected to forms indicates the connection of flowing. Thus, the eye consciousness flows towards forms in three ways: towards pleasant objects, it flows with the perception of attachment; towards unpleasant objects, it flows with the perception of anger; and towards objects that are neither pleasant nor unpleasant, it flows with the perception of equanimity. Similarly, the mind being connected to dharmas and so on is also like that. Those objects are called the objects of the mind's activity, therefore, the mind acts and performs various actions on those objects, hence it is called the object of the mind's activity. Great King, if the mind clings to pleasant forms, then desire arises; if it clings to unpleasant forms, then hatred arises; if it clings to forms that are neither pleasant nor unpleasant, then delusion arises. Similarly, for sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations, one experiences taking objects on the three types of dharmas, just like before. Great King, for those, know that the senses are like illusions and the objects are like dreams. Great King, for example, a person dreams of enjoying pleasures with a beautiful woman in a dream while sleeping. When that person wakes up from sleep and remembers the beautiful woman seen in the dream, Great King, what do you think? Does the beautiful woman seen in the dream exist? World Honored One, she does not exist. The Buddha said: Great King, what do you think? If someone plays, rejoices, and becomes attached to the woman who is seen as a beautiful woman in a dream, is that person of a wise nature? World Honored One, that is not so. Why is that? World Honored One, the beautiful woman seen in the dream does not actually exist and is not visible, so how can one enjoy pleasures with her? Moreover, what about the person who is attached to her?
