This is the thirteenth chapter on abiding. Abiding in mindfulness has been explained. Like this, after the mind becomes capable, one should also enter into emptiness. Because the emptiness of the individual, Is thus very established. Therefore, by cutting off the root, all afflictions will not arise. As it is said in the Holy Tathagata Secret Sutra: Peaceful wisdom is like this, for example, if a tree is cut off from its roots, all the branches, leaves, and small twigs will wither. Peaceful wisdom is also like this, if the attachment to the view of the aggregates is pacified, then all afflictions and near afflictions will be pacified. It is said like this. The benefits of meditating on emptiness are immeasurable. Briefly, as it is said in the Moon Lamp Sutra: He will never abandon the teachings of the Sugatas. The hero will never be dominated by women. He will find joy in the teachings of the Sugatas. He will know that the nature of the Dharma is extremely peaceful. He will not stay here long, he will become the lord of the two-legged. He will become a good doctor who gives happiness. He will completely remove the poisonous arrows of all sufferings. He will know that the nature of the Dharma is extremely peaceful. The moon among men will surpass with the power of patience. Even if struck by stones and sticks, he will not be disturbed. Even if his limbs are cut off, he will not be disturbed. He will know that the nature of the Dharma is extremely peaceful. He will never be born in a bad rebirth. He will always have a beautiful form and marks. He will always meditate on these five superknowledges. The hero will always abide in front of the Sugatas. It is said like this. The Blessed Mother also said: Shariputra, furthermore, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who want to perfectly accomplish the Buddha's body, who want to obtain the thirty-two marks of a great man and the eighty minor marks, who want to remember their past lives in all lifetimes, not to lose their Bodhicitta, to obtain the conduct and names of Bodhisattvas, who want to completely abandon evil spiritual friends and evil companions, who want to be with the Buddha and Bodhi Sattvas and virtuous friends

Wishing to please all relatives, wishing to subdue all the gods of the demon class, wishing to purify all obscurations, and wishing to obtain unobstructed access to all dharmas, one should train in the Perfection of Wisdom. Shariputra, furthermore, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thinks, "I shall praise all the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who reside in the ten directions," he should also train in the Perfection of Wisdom. Shariputra, furthermore, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, with a single aspiration, wishes to traverse world realms as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River in the eastern direction, and similarly combining them, wishes to traverse all ten directions, he should also train in the Perfection of Wisdom. Thus, and so forth, it is extensively taught. Thus, how is it that although all dharmas are without self, the connection to actions and their results is not contradictory, and although they are without inherent nature, how is it that all the dharmas that are seen are not contradictory? As such, it is shown in the "Sutra of the Meeting of Father and Son": "Great King, this man is the six elements, the six sense spheres of contact, and the eighteen mental applications. Great King, that this man is the six elements, upon what basis is this said? Great King, the six elements are these. What are the six? They are: the earth element, the water element, the fire element, the wind element, the space element, and the consciousness element. Great King, those are the six elements; that these men are the six elements, what I said is based on that. That this man is the six sense spheres of contact, upon what basis is this said? Great King, the six sense spheres of contact are these. What are the six? For seeing forms, the eye sense sphere of contact; for hearing sounds, the ear sense sphere of contact; for smelling odors, the nose sense sphere of contact; for tasting flavors, the tongue sense sphere of contact; for touching tangible objects, the body sense sphere of contact; and for discriminating dharmas, the mind sense sphere of contact.

Those are the six sources of contact. What I said about these individuals being the six sources of contact was based on that. Great King, what I said about these individuals being the eighteen mental applications, what was it based on? Great King, the eighteen mental applications are these. What are the eighteen? Here, when the eye sees a form, pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral feelings arise, and one applies oneself to the form. Similarly, it should be said for the ear and so on. Great King, those six pleasant applications, those six unpleasant applications, and those six neutral applications, when combined, become the eighteen mental applications. Combine them in the same way. Great King, what is the internal earth element? Whatever it may be, in this body, the aspect of hardness and roughness inside, that which is close and held. And what is that? For example, hair and body hair, nails, and so on. Great King, what is the external earth element? Whatever it may be, the aspect of hardness and roughness outside, that which is not close and not held, this is called the external earth element. Great King, for that internal earth element, when it arises, it does not come from anywhere, and when it ceases, it does not disappear anywhere. Great King, the time when a woman inwardly thinks, "I am a woman," that time exists. She inwardly thinks of herself as a woman, and then outwardly thinks of a man as a man. After she outwardly thinks of a man as a man, she becomes attached and desires to meet the external man. A man also inwardly thinks, "I am a man." After he inwardly thinks of himself as a man, he then outwardly thinks of a woman as a woman. After he outwardly thinks of a woman as a woman, he becomes attached and desires to meet the external woman. Because he desires to meet, he will meet. Because of the cause of meeting, there will be that time when semen and blood are produced. Great King, what is universal conceptualization?
