When, relying on the field of karma, moistened by the moisture of craving, and sown by ignorance, birth occurs, in the place of birth, the mother's womb where rebirth takes place, the sprout of name and form manifestly comes into being. However, that sprout of name and form is not made by me, not made by another, not made by both, not made by Ishvara, not transformed by time, not born from nature, not dependent on a maker, and not born from nothing. However, when father and mother meet, the time is right, and other conditions gather, in the ownerless dharma, without grasping at selflessness, like space, in the nature of illusion, because there is no lack of causes and conditions, in the place of birth, the mother's womb where rebirth takes place, the seed of consciousness endowed with experience manifestly brings about the sprout of name and form. For example, eye consciousness arises from five causes. What are the five? Relying on the eye faculty, form, light, space, and the attention that arises from it, eye consciousness arises. Among these, the eye is the function of the basis of eye consciousness; form is the function of the object of eye consciousness; light is the function of manifestation; space is the function of non-obstruction; the attention that arises from it is the function of thought. Without these conditions, eye consciousness will not arise. Just as at dawn, if the eyeball is not fully formed, similarly, form, light, space, and the attention that arises from it are also not fully formed, and when all are gathered, eye consciousness will arise. Among these, the eye does not think, "I will act as the basis of eye consciousness," nor does form think, "I will act as the object of eye consciousness," nor does light think, "I will act as the manifestation of eye consciousness," nor does space think, "I will act as the non-obstruction of eye consciousness," nor does the attention that arises from it think, "I will act as the thought of eye consciousness."

Also, eye consciousness does not think, "I am produced by these causes and conditions," but nevertheless, eye consciousness arises from the existence of these causes and conditions. The remaining faculties should also be understood accordingly. Therefore, no dharma transmigrates from this world to another, but because the causes and conditions are complete, the result of karma also manifests. Similarly, it can be compared to the appearance of a face's reflection on a well-cleaned mirror; the face does not transmigrate into the mirror, but because the causes and conditions are complete, the face also manifests. Similarly, no one dies and transmigrates from here, nor is born elsewhere, but because all the causes and conditions are complete, the result of karma also manifests. For example, the moon's disc is forty-two thousand yojanas away, yet the reflection of the moon's disc appears in a small vessel filled with water; the moon's disc does not move from its place, nor does it enter the small vessel filled with water, but because the causes and conditions are complete, the reflection of the moon's disc also appears. Similarly, no one dies and transmigrates from here, nor is born elsewhere, but because all the causes and conditions are complete, the result of karma also manifests. For example, fire does not burn without causes and conditions, but it burns when causes and conditions are assembled. Similarly, for ownerless dharmas, non-self, non-attachment, like space, the nature of illusion, because all the causes and conditions are complete, in the place of birth, the connecting mother's womb, from the seed consciousness, produced by karma and afflictions, the sprout of name and form manifests. Among them, there are five aspects of internal dependent origination: What are the five? They are: impermanence, non-cessation, non-transference, small cause producing great effect, and continuity of the same kind. How is it not permanent? Because the aggregates eventually die.

And those belonging to other births are also other. The final aggregates of death are not the same as those belonging to birth. The final aggregates of death cease, and the aggregates belonging to birth arise, therefore it is not permanent. How is it not annihilation? The final aggregates of death cease, and the aggregates belonging to birth do not arise from that cessation, nor do they arise from cessation, but as the final aggregates of death cease, at that very moment the aggregates belonging to birth arise like the two ends of a balance, therefore it is not annihilation. How is it not transference? From different kinds of sentient beings, the birth of beings corresponding to their merit is accomplished, therefore it is not transference. How does a great result arise from a small cause? Having done a small deed, one experiences the ripening of a great result, therefore a great result is accomplished from a small cause. How does one experience the ripening of the deed that one will experience, and therefore one experiences it in a continuum similar to it. Bhikshu Shariputra, the dependent origination correctly proclaimed by the Blessed One, whoever sees with correct wisdom, in this way correctly, as it is, constantly, continuously, lifeless and devoid of life, and as it is, without error, unborn, unbecome, unmade, unconditioned, unimpeded, without object, peaceful, fearless, unseizable, inexhaustible, the nature of not being completely pacified, and emptiness, accumulation, hollowness, without essence, disease and tumor, suffering, sin, impermanence, suffering, emptiness and selflessness, then, he will not think about the past, wondering whether I existed in the past or did not exist. Nor will he think about the future, wondering what will become of the future, what it will be like. Nor will he think about the present, what is this, what is it like, what is there, what will become, where do these sentient beings come from, where do they go after dying and transmigrating from here.
