From the aggregation of the earth element, internal dependent origination should be regarded as related to causes and conditions. So, what is the earth element of internal dependent origination? Whatever aggregates and causes the solid substance of the body to manifest and be accomplished is called the earth element. Whatever performs the function of gathering the body is called the water element. Whatever digests the food, drink, medicine, and tastes of the body is called the fire element. Whatever performs the function of the body's breath moving in and out is called the wind element. Whatever makes the body have internal cavities is called the space element. Whatever, in the manner of a house's ridgepole, causes the sprout of the body's name and form to manifest and be accomplished, belonging to the collection of the five consciousnesses, and the consciousness of mind that is defiled, is called the consciousness element. Without these causes and conditions, the body will not arise, but when the internal earth element is complete, and likewise the water, fire, wind, space, and consciousness elements are also complete, and all are aggregated, from that the body will manifest and be accomplished. However, the earth element does not think, 'I will cause the solid substance of the body to manifest and be accomplished.' The water element does not think, 'I will perform the function of gathering the body.' The fire element does not think, 'I will digest the food, drink, medicine, and tastes of the body.' The wind element does not think, 'I will perform the function of the body's breath moving in and out.' The space element does not think, 'I will make the body have internal cavities.' The consciousness element does not think, 'I will cause the body's name and form to manifest and be accomplished.' The body also does not think, 'I am produced by these causes and conditions.' Although they do not think in this way, nevertheless, when these causes and conditions are present, the body will arise. Therefore, the earth element is not self, not a sentient being, not life, not a creator, not born of power, not a child of power, not a woman, not a man, not a hermaphrodite, not I, not mine, nor anyone else's.

No. Likewise, the earth element, the water element, the fire element, the wind element, the space element, and the consciousness element are also not self, not sentient beings, not life, not a creator, not born of power, not a son of power, not a woman, not a man, not a hermaphrodite, not I, not mine, nor anyone else's. What then is ignorance? It is the perception of any one of these six elements as being singular, as being whole, as being permanent, as being stable, as being enduring, as being happy, as being self, as being a sentient being, as being life, as being a creator, as being a nourisher, as being a male, as being a person, as being born of power, as being a son of power, as being 'I,' as being 'mine,' and so forth. Such various forms of not knowing are called ignorance. Thus, because there is ignorance, attachment, hatred, and delusion arise towards objects. Therefore, whatever attachment, hatred, and delusion there is towards objects is called formations conditioned by ignorance. Discerning individual objects is consciousness. Consciousness and the four aggregates that arise together, which are taken up, are name and form. The faculties that rely on name and form are the six sense sources. The coming together of three things is contact. Experiencing contact is feeling. Attachment to feeling is craving. The increase of craving is grasping. From grasping, the karma of rebirth, which is existence, is becoming. From that cause, the arising of the aggregates is birth. After being born, the maturing of the aggregates is aging. After aging, the destruction of the aggregates is death. At death, the inner torment, together with manifest attachment to delusion, is sorrow. The lament that arises from sorrow, expressed in words, is lamentation. Experiencing discomfort with the aggregate of the five consciousnesses is suffering. Mental suffering, which is associated with attention, is unhappiness. Furthermore, such proximate defilements are called disturbance. Similarly, combine it. Therefore, because of the great darkness, it is ignorance. Manifestly
