Because of the act of formation, there are formations. Because of the act of distinguishing, there is consciousness. Because of the act of relying, there are name and form. Because of the gate of birth, there are the six sense sources. Because of the act of contact, there is contact. Because of the act of experiencing, there is feeling. Because of thirst, there is craving. Because of grasping, there is clinging. Because of generating existence again, there is existence. Because of the arising of aggregates, there is birth. Because of the maturing of aggregates, there is aging. Because of destruction, there is death. Because of sorrow, there is grief. Because of speaking with words, there is lamentation. Because of harm to the body, there is suffering. Because of harm to the mind, there is unhappiness. Because of afflictions, there is disturbance. Furthermore, not understanding that very thing and wrongly understanding, that ignorance is ignorance. Thus, when there is ignorance, three kinds of formations are manifestly accomplished: approaching merit, approaching non-merit, and approaching immovability. This is called formations conditioned by ignorance. From the formations that approach merit, consciousness itself becomes that which approaches merit. For the formations that approach non-merit, consciousness itself becomes that which approaches non-merit. From the formations that approach immovability, consciousness itself becomes that which approaches immovability. This is called consciousness conditioned by formations. Name and form are also the same. When name and form increase, activities arise from the gate of the six sense sources. This is called the six sense sources conditioned by name and form. From those six sense sources, the six collections of contact arise. This is called contact conditioned by the six sense sources. Just as contact arises, so does feeling arise. This is called feeling conditioned by contact. Experiencing those distinctions of feeling, as well as manifesting joy, particularly clinging, and abiding with particular clinging, this is called existence conditioned by feeling. From experiencing, manifesting joy, particularly clinging, and abiding with particular clinging, the nature of self-suffering, the nature of happiness, and not separating

Not thinking that it should be left alone, but rather striving to cultivate the field, this is called taking with 'becoming' as the condition. Thus, striving in this way, from body, speech, and mind, fully initiating the karma that can again produce 'becoming', this is called 'becoming' with 'grasping' as the condition. The aggregates that arise from that karma gathering together, this is called birth with 'becoming' as the condition. After being born, the aggregates that have already manifested and achieved grow and fully ripen, and eventually move towards decay, this is called aging and death with 'birth' as the condition. Combine them in this way. Therefore, these twelve links of dependent origination are, one cause for one, one condition for one. It is not permanent, nor is it impermanent. It is not conditioned, nor is it unconditioned. It is not without cause, nor is it without condition. It is not without feeling. It is not the nature of decay. It is not the nature of destruction. It is not the nature of cessation. It has entered from beginningless time, continuously following like the flow of the wind. However, these four links are the cause for summarizing the twelve links of dependent origination. What are the four? They are ignorance, craving, karma, and consciousness. Among them, consciousness acts as the cause with the nature of a seed. Karma acts as the cause with the nature of a field. Ignorance and craving act as the cause with the nature of affliction. Therefore, karma and affliction produce seed consciousness. Among them, karma performs the function of the field for seed consciousness. Becoming moistens seed consciousness. Ignorance sows seed consciousness, and without those conditions, seed consciousness will not manifest and achieve. Therefore, karma also does not think, 'I will perform the function of the field for seed consciousness.' Craving also does not think, 'I will moisten seed consciousness.' Ignorance also does not think, 'I will sow seed consciousness.' Seed consciousness also does not think, 'I am born from these conditions,' but rather from seed consciousness
