All dharmas are empty of inherent existence, free from coming and going, like a reflection. One should contemplate thus, saying that they are free from the nature of existence and so forth, and with a mind that becomes one with non-conceptualization and non-verbalization, one should meditate only on that and remain as long as one desires. This samadhi is taught in the samadhi called "The Buddha Now Present." The benefits of this samadhi should be understood in detail from that very sutra. Or, one should examine in this way: Is the object of focus well held? Or is it sinking? Or is the mind distracted by external objects? If one is overwhelmed by dullness and sleep, one should bring to mind the most delightful object, such as the form of the Buddha's body. Or, one should bring to mind the twelve deeds or dependent origination and dispel sinking and dullness. If the mind is agitated by a previously experienced object, or if one suspects agitation, or if it seems that one cannot fix the mind on the true meaning, then one should remember that all compounded things are impermanent, are suffering, and so forth, and the various impurities within, and that external objects also quickly separate, are unreliable, and are of a nature that does not constantly accompany, and one should pacify agitation. When sinking and agitation are gone, and the mind dwells calmly on the object of focus, at that time, relax the effort and let it be equanimous. In short, one should tie the elephant of the mind to the tree of the object of focus with the rope of mindfulness and awareness. Then, the yogi should abide in calm abiding and seek that alone with wisdom, and one should think that one should not be satisfied with calm abiding alone. What is that alone like? In ultimate truth, all things are without inherent existence, and persons and the five aggregates, and all that is designated as dharma, are only emptiness. And what realizes that? It is realized by wisdom, not by anything else. As the noble *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* says: "Lord, how does a bodhisattva hold that the inherent existence of dharmas does not exist? Avalokiteśvara holds it with the perfection of wisdom." Thus it is said. Therefore, one should abide in calm abiding and cultivate wisdom.

It should be done. In this regard, the yogi should analyze in this way: a person is not found to be separate from the aggregates, elements, and sense bases. A person is also not the nature of the aggregates, etc., because those aggregates, etc., are impermanent and of multiple natures, and a person is permanent and of a single nature, so they are examined by others. There cannot be a real entity of a person that is neither the same nor different, because there is no other way for an entity to exist. Therefore, the worldly "I" and "mine" are merely delusions, and this should be analyzed. Selflessness of phenomena should also be cultivated in this way: phenomena, in short, are the five aggregates, twelve sense bases, and eighteen elements. Among these, any of the aggregates, sense bases, and elements that are corporeal are, in ultimate reality, not separate from the aspect of mind, because they can be broken down into atoms, and if the atoms are also individually examined for their component nature, then their nature cannot be definitively grasped. As it is said in the Noble Lankavatara Sutra: "Substances are completely broken down into atoms, do not discriminate about form, the establishment of mind-only, does not discriminate about evil views." Therefore, from beginningless time, due to the power of attachment to the non-real appearance of form, just as the appearance of forms, etc., that are perceived in a dream, to children, mind itself appears as if form, etc., are cut off externally, but in ultimate reality, form, etc., are not separate from the aspect of mind, and this should be analyzed. The Lankavatara Sutra also says: "External form does not exist, one's own mind appears externally." Again, the Lankavatara Sutra says: "Relying on mind-only, do not examine external objects, focusing on suchness, eliminate from mind-only, having eliminated from mind-only, eliminate into non-appearance, the yogi who abides in non-appearance, sees the Great Vehicle." As it is said, just as external objects do not exist in ultimate reality, so too, mind should not appear in this way, how is it? An object is the nature of consciousness, therefore it is an object.
