The Meditation on Gradual Entry. The Meditation on Gradual Entry. The Meditation on Gradual Entry is presented. Homage to youthful Manjushri! Those who wish to abandon all obscurations and quickly attain omniscience should strive to cultivate shamatha and vipashyana and generate the mind of enlightenment. Although those who are like the blind cannot teach, I will speak relying on the scriptures and other treatises. If shamatha and vipashyana are cultivated properly, non-conceptual wisdom will arise, and by its arising, all obscurations will be abandoned, and omniscience will be attained. This comes from diligently practicing shamatha and vipashyana for a long time. Therefore, one should strive to cultivate shamatha and vipashyana. If the cause is not cultivated, the result will not arise, just like seeds and sprouts. The result will not arise from the wrong cause, just as milk cannot be milked from a horn. If all causes are not utilized, the result of omniscience will not arise, just as if any of the seeds, etc., are missing, the result will not arise. The Noble Sutra Compendium of All Dharmas also says: Those who wish to follow me should abide in shamatha and vipashyana. Therefore, any yogi should cultivate shamatha and vipashyana and generate the mind of enlightenment. For example, by dwelling in a house of precious beryl, one can clearly see everything inside and out. Similarly, by abiding in this non-conceptual state, one can realize the ultimate nature of all dharmas, purify all obscurations, and attain omniscience, which is definitely dependent on the cause. Therefore, one should cultivate non-conceptuality. For example, if one goes to the top of a high mountain, one can see almost everything clearly. Similarly, by abiding in this non-conceptual state, one will become unattached and unobstructed to all objects of knowledge. Therefore, one should cultivate shamatha and vipashyana. The teacher Nagarjuna also said: Those who have transcended and do not abide in the presence or absence of mind should cultivate the meaning of profound, aimless dependent arising. The Noble King of Samadhi Sutra also says: Who

Therefore, understanding the selflessness of all phenomena, examining them individually, if one cultivates this, it is the cause for obtaining the fruit of Nirvana. No other cause can bring about cessation. Thus it is said. The Blessed One also declared: Those who are born, having cultivated insight (vipassanā) and calm abiding (samatha), will be liberated from the bonds of the lower realms and the bonds of signs. Thus it is said. Also, in the Holy *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "Samadhi subdues the afflictions, and wisdom thoroughly abandons the latent tendencies." Therefore, those who wish to abandon all obscurations should cultivate calm abiding and insight. The power of calm abiding, like a lamp in a windless place, makes the mind unwavering on its object. Insight, like the sun rising in the darkness, thoroughly understands the suchness of phenomena as they are, giving rise to correct appearance, and thus all obscurations will be abandoned. By merely cultivating calm abiding alone, yogis do not abandon obscurations, but only temporarily suppress afflictions. Because without the light of wisdom arising, latent tendencies cannot be completely destroyed. Therefore, latent tendencies will not be completely destroyed. Therefore, in that same Holy *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*, it is said: "Samadhi subdues the afflictions, and wisdom completely destroys the latent tendencies." Also, in the Holy *Samadhiraja Sutra*: Although one cultivates samadhi, it does not destroy the concept of self. It pacifies afflictions and greatly agitates. This excessive conduct is like cultivating samadhi. If one individually understands the selflessness of phenomena, examining them individually, if one cultivates this, it is the cause for obtaining the fruit of Nirvana. No other cause can bring about cessation. Thus it is said. Also, in the Bodhisattva Pitaka: Those who have not heard this category of Dharma from the Bodhisattva Pitaka, and have not heard the Vinaya of the Holy Ones, but are content with only samadhi, will fall into samsara due to pride, and will experience birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, and suffering.
