It is said that with a mind focused on solitude, one should perceive all things as solitude, and with a mind that is never satisfied in seeking the Dharma, one should think that one is dwelling in solitude. Therefore, one should generate a mind that is even more in accordance with that sutra than solitude itself. The guidance on choosing a solitary place is also explained in the Noble Cloud of Jewels Sutra: "Any place where the range of begging for alms is not too far, nor too near; any place where there is no muddy water or fields, clean and stainless, easy to obtain; any place where trees are abundant, flowers are abundant, fruits are abundant, leaves are abundant, there are no fierce wild animals, it possesses caves, it possesses medicinal valleys, there are no disgusting things, it is comfortable to walk, peaceful, and non-dualistic, one should dwell in such places." It is also said: "If a monk dwells in solitude, and a king or minister or other Brahmin, Kshatriya, town or village people come to him, he should respectfully say to them, 'Welcome.' He should say to the great king, 'Please sit on the prepared seat.' If he sits down, both should sit down. If he does not sit down, neither should sit down. If he is a stable, gentle, and one whose senses are thoroughly pacified, and it is appropriate to teach him the Dharma, then one should teach him various Dharmas. If he does not like to hear various Dharmas, then one should teach him the Dharma that is in accordance with renunciation and happiness. If he does not like to hear the Dharma that is in accordance with renunciation, then one should teach him the greatness of the Tathagata. If Brahmins, Kshatriyas, townspeople, or villagers come, one should teach them the Dharma as appropriate. Even if one cannot satisfy the minds of those who listen to the Dharma by hearing it extensively in this way, those sentient beings will also gain joy, faith, and admiration for him." It is also said in the Noble Heap of Jewels Sutra: "If a monk dwells in solitude, and snakes and fierce wild animals come to an ordinary person who has not attained the fruit, he should not be afraid or frightened of them. He should think, 'From the very beginning, I have abandoned my body and life and come to a solitary place, I should not be afraid of this.'

Do not be afraid, do not be fearful, generate a mind of loving-kindness, completely abandon hatred, completely abandon fear, generate the mind with such thoughts. Even if snakes and wild animals take your life and devour you, think this: 'I cannot satisfy these wild animals with mere possessions. If they eat my flesh, they will abide in comfort, and I too will have extracted essence from this body devoid of essence. I will have gained a great gain.' If, when dwelling in a solitary place, non-humans come, whether they are beautiful or ugly, do not be attached to them, do not be angry. If gods who have previously seen the Teacher, the Buddha, come to a solitary monk and ask questions, then that solitary monk should teach the Dharma to those gods according to what he has heard. If those gods ask profound questions and the solitary monk cannot answer, then he should be without arrogance and not despise them for not having learned. He should rely on the teachings of the Buddha and strive to understand the Dharma that he has not yet understood. When he has understood it, then he can answer all the questions. He should say, 'I am here to listen to the Dharma, please teach me with kindness.' Thus, the solitary Light Protector should make those gods understand. It is also said that when dwelling in that solitary place, one should generate this thought: 'I have come here from a long way, alone and without a companion. There is no friend to encourage good or bad deeds. But there are gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, and Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who know the thoughts of my mind. If I dwell in a solitary place and am controlled by an unwholesome mind, they will be controlled.' Therefore, the solitary one should also generate this thought. Thus, those who wish to abandon all obscurations and quickly attain omniscience should dwell in solitude, cultivate shamatha and vipashyana, and generate the mind of bodhichitta. Do not...
