It arises from views, my place, completely contemplating me, and protecting me. If I dwell in solitude, but have not completely abandoned the clinging to self, and the manifest attachment to self, and completely grasping self, and my basis, and craving for self, and thinking of self, and saying that I am near, and viewing me as me, and my place, and completely contemplating me, and not completely abandoning protecting me, then my dwelling in solitude becomes meaningless, one should learn in this way. For thinking of self, there is no dwelling in solitude. Thinking of others, it is also meaningless, one should think in this way. What is called a householder dwelling in solitude is to dwell without relying on all dharmas, to dwell without clinging to all dharmas, to dwell without being attached to all characteristics, to dwell without relying on all forms, to dwell without relying on all sounds, smells, tastes, and touches, to dwell without all dharmas contradicting equality, to dwell with the mind extremely pacified and extremely subdued, to dwell without fear by abandoning all fears, to dwell having crossed the river by being liberated from all afflictions, to dwell steadfastly, to be content with meager things, and to dwell with great joy in the noble lineage with few desires, to dwell being content with being easy to satisfy and easy to nourish, to abide in listening by combining with discipline for the sake of wisdom, to dwell in the gate of liberation emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, to dwell in individual liberation, to dwell liberated by cutting all bonds, to dwell pacifying the untamed in accordance with dependent origination, to dwell having done what needs to be done with extreme purity, thus it was said. The yogi should also think in this way and dwell in solitude. Again it was said, a householder is like in a solitary place where there are grass, trees, thorns and forests, but there is no fear and he does not become afraid. Similarly, when a Bodhisattva, who has gone forth, dwells in solitude, he also generates thoughts about the body like grass, trees, thorns, medicine, walls, wood, eye disease and illusion.

One should act in this way, and one should generate the thought: Who would be afraid of me? Who would fear me? Thus it is said, therefore, the recluse should generate such a mind. It is also said: Householder, other Bodhisattvas who have gone forth, knowing that they have been instructed to dwell in the Buddha's monastery, should dwell in the monastery. There, all virtuous dharmas will be perfected. Relying on virtuous friends, later, entering villages, cities, towns, regions, countries, and royal palaces, they should teach the Dharma. Householder, if a Bodhisattva who has gone forth wishes to enter the Sangha in order to receive texts and recite them, he should be respectful there. He should be respectful to the Khenpos and Acharyas, as well as to the elders, the middle ones, and the newly ordained Bhikshus. One should be skilled in discipline. Without laziness in one's own affairs, and without harming others. One should not be greedy for offerings. He should think like this: The Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, together with the world of gods, together with the Maras, together with Brahma, together with the ascetics and Brahmins, and together with gods, humans, and asuras, has become a place of offering and giving. He has served all sentient beings more than anything else, yet he does not consider it his own. What need is there to mention those of us who have not yet learned but want to learn? I should serve all sentient beings, but I should never consider any service as my own. One should think like this. What is the reason for this? Householder, a Bhikshu who is greedy for offerings wastes the rejoicing in virtue. Those whom he gathers will also think: We are gathered for offerings, not for the Dharma. Thus it is said. It is also said from there: Householder, if a Bodhisattva recluse wants to hear the Dharma, or wants to visit the Khenpo and Acharya, or goes to the village to inquire about illness, then he should generate the intention to go for the sake of returning. If one forces others to receive texts and recite them, even if one lives in a temple, one should do so.
