The steadfast one constantly applies himself to the path of enlightenment. Even if his body is cut into pieces, these cannot shake his mind. Because he does not hope for omniscience, he initiates extremely firm diligence here. Thus it is said. If one obtains this leisure and fortune endowed with attainments, but does not abandon and subdue thoughts of gain and respect, and attachment, then he is the only one deceived by the world, including the gods. Therefore, one should renounce the household, rely on solitary places, and strive to cultivate tranquility and insight. The Holy Jewel Heap Sutra also says: "Well-guarded, just as a person is swallowed by the great ocean and dies as if thirsty for water. Similarly, well-guarded, some ascetics and Brahmins learn many Dharmas, and although they understand everything, they do not abandon craving for desire, do not abandon craving for hatred, do not abandon craving for ignorance. These people are swallowed by the ocean of Dharma, will be thirsty for the thirst of afflictions, and will fall into evil destinies." Therefore, the yogi should not generate even a moment of thought towards all desires and afflictions. The Sutra Requested by the Fierce Householder also says: "The householder further asked, the Bodhisattva renounced and dwells in a solitary place, so why do I dwell in a solitary place? Merely dwelling in a solitary place is not an ascetic, because this is not purified, not hidden, not pacified, not tamed, not diligent, not zealous, just as wild animals, monkeys, many birds, thieves, and Chandalas also dwell in abundance, and they do not have the qualities of ascetics. Why do I dwell in a solitary place? Thus one should contemplate, in order to perfect the meaning of asceticism. The householder further asked, the Bodhisattva renounced and dwells in a solitary place, why have I come to a solitary place? Thus one should contemplate, thus I have come to a solitary place because of fear. What makes you afraid? It is noise that makes me afraid, it is association that makes me afraid, it is desire, hatred, and ignorance that make me afraid, I

Being haughty and arrogant, and fearing and being afraid of concealment. Fearing and being afraid of attachment, jealousy, and stinginess. Fearing and being afraid of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Fearing and being afraid of the demon of the aggregates. Fearing and being afraid of the demon of afflictions. Fearing and being afraid of the demon of the Lord of Death. Fearing and being afraid of the demon of the son of the gods. Fearing and being afraid of the perverted view of permanence in impermanence. Fearing and being afraid of the perverted view of happiness in suffering. Fearing and being afraid of the perverted view of self in non-self. Fearing and being afraid of the perverted view of purity in impurity. Fearing and being afraid of mind, intellect, and consciousness. Fearing and being afraid of existence. Fearing and being afraid of samsara. Fearing and being afraid of the view of the perishable collection. Fearing and being afraid of clinging to what belongs to self in clinging to self. Fearing and being afraid of excitement. Fearing and being afraid of regret and doubt. Fearing and being afraid of evil friends. Fearing and being afraid of gain and honor. Fearing and being afraid of unwholesome spiritual friends. Fearing and being afraid of the defilements of ascetics. Fearing and being afraid of thinking of harming each other. Fearing and being afraid of the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm. Fearing and being afraid of death and birth in all realms of existence. Fearing and being afraid of going to the hells of sentient beings, the places of animals, and the realms of pretas. Fearing and being afraid of unfavorable conditions. In short, fearing and being afraid of contemplating all non-virtuous dharmas, therefore, I, fearing and being afraid of such fear, came to a solitary place, so it is said. Therefore, even having practiced yoga, one should dwell in a solitary place in accordance with the sutras. One should not dwell with other intentions. Again, it is said, householder, other Bodhisattvas, having gone forth, dwell in a solitary place out of fear and dread. Whatever slight fear arises in them, all of that arises from clinging to self. Manifest attachment to self, and complete grasping of self, and the basis of self, and conceiving of self, and speaking of self, drawing near to self, and to self
