It is done. It is the same if you do not practice the Dharma. So it is said. These words are for other times, so the result will take a long time. It is said that without practice, one cannot achieve omniscience. Some say that by giving alms and making offerings to the Three Jewels, one can attain Bodhi, so there is no need to rely on monasteries or practice. This is the explanation: Without relying on monasteries and without practicing, one cannot attain omniscience. For example, in the Sutra of the Great Lion's Roar of the Noble Maitreya, it is said: "O Light Protector, if someone fills this three-thousand-great-thousand world with grain and butter, starting from the pile of water and reaching to the top of the realm of Brahma, and erects a wick as large as Mount Sumeru, and makes offerings to the Tathagata. Furthermore, filling this three-thousand-great-thousand world with flowers, incense, powders, spices, banners, streamers, umbrellas, and so on, and offering them to the Tathagata three times a day and three times a night for hundreds of thousands of years. It is not as good as those who strive for Bodhi and abide by the precepts, receiving teachings from a Khenpo or Acharya, reciting, and even contemplating the meaning of a four-line verse, fearing and dreading the noise of speech, fearing and dreading all of the three realms, striving for the benefit of sentient beings, manifestly turning towards the monastery, and abandoning seven steps. This will accumulate more merit." Furthermore, the Wheel-Turning King offered various flowers to the Tathagata for eighty-four thousand years, offering food, clothing, bedding, medicine, flowers, incense, banners, streamers, umbrellas, the throne, and the seven precious jewels. It is not as good as those who dwell in the monastery and meditate on the fact that all dharmas do not arise, even for the time it takes to snap one's fingers. The former is not as good as one in a thousand, one in a million, one in a billion, one in a hundred billion, one in a trillion, one in a trillion trillion, and even uncountable.

It is said that division, counting, metaphor, approximation, and the middle of cause are not close either. Giving is said to be a small meaning, and relying on a secluded place to practice is said to be a great meaning, as stated in many sutras. The Sutra of the Four Noble Dharmas states: "Monks, a great Bodhisattva should not abandon living in a secluded place even for the sake of life, as long as he lives." The Holy Jewel Heap Sutra states: "The Buddhas, lords of the world, of the past, wherever they passed into nirvana, in the most secluded of all secluded places, attained the unsurpassed enlightenment. If one quickly dwells in a secluded place, one will abandon the craving for desires, and after truly knowing the faults, the mind will be freed from those faults. Having quickly abandoned the household and dwelling in a secluded place, the wise ones, having truly seen, should follow the Buddhas. Those who strive for enlightenment should rely on solitude, those will be happy in solitude, those will not be happy in the household. Those are the conduct and behavior of the pure Buddhas, whoever enters this path, it is not difficult for him to attain enlightenment." Thus it is said, therefore one should rely on a secluded place and diligently practice calm abiding and insight. The Holy Manjushri's Pure Land Qualities Adornment Sutra states: "Again, Shariputra, if a householder Bodhisattva serves and honors as many Tathagatas and Sangha retinues as there are sands in the Ganges River for as many kalpas as there are sands in the Ganges River with all comforts, it is not as much as a Bodhisattva who has renounced or wishes to renounce, turns away from busyness and takes seven steps towards a secluded place. This generates more merit than the former and will quickly attain enlightenment." Thus it is said, therefore one should diligently practice in a secluded place. Some say that by reciting, all karma and afflictions will be purified, so there is no need to properly apply the mind. The explanation for this is, the Holy Jewel Heap Sutra states: "Kashyapa, for example, if a house or room has passed hundreds of thousands of years and the lamp has never been extinguished, someone lights many lamps there
