Those beings who do not strive for perfection but only tame themselves, inevitably fall into the state of Shravakas or Pratyekabuddhas. Those who, having realized that beings are devoid of inherent existence, and having vowed to liberate all beings through the power of great compassion, like illusionists whose wisdom is not inverted, cultivate vast accumulations of merit and wisdom, attain the state of the Tathagatas and dwell in samsara, perfectly teaching and benefiting all beings in every way. They, too, having abandoned all defilements through the power of the accumulation of wisdom, will not fall into samsara again. And by virtue of accumulating vast and immeasurable accumulations of merit by looking upon all beings, they will not fall into nirvana either. They will also become the close support of all beings. Therefore, those who wish to benefit and bring happiness to all beings, and who wish to attain non-abiding nirvana, should always strive to accomplish vast accumulations of merit and wisdom. One should think in this way. These are also taught in the secret sutra of the Tathagatas: "Through the accumulation of wisdom, all defilements will be abandoned. Through the accumulation of merit, all beings will be closely supported." Blessed One, it is so. Bodhisattvas, great beings, should strive for the accumulation of merit and the accumulation of wisdom. In the Noble Sutra of the Arising of the Tathagatas, it is also said: "The arising of the Tathagatas is not due to a single cause. Why is that? Noble sons, the Tathagatas are perfectly accomplished by hundreds of thousands of immeasurable causes. What are the ten? For example, the cause of perfect accomplishment by being insatiable with immeasurable merit and wisdom," and so forth, extensively explained. In the Noble Teaching of Vimalakirti, it is also said: "Friends, the body of the Tathagata is certainly born from a hundred merits, certainly born from all virtuous dharmas," and so forth, extensively explained.

arise. Having done that, slowly undo the lotus position, prostrate to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas residing in the ten directions, and make offerings and praises to them. Make aspirations such as the Noble Excellent Conduct Prayer. Then, one should diligently strive to accumulate the collection of merit, such as giving, which is entirely dedicated to emptiness, great compassion, and unsurpassed Bodhi. Among them, some think that Bodhi can be attained merely by hearing the profound Dharma. As it is said in the Sutra of the Noble Jewel Source, "Merely hearing this sutra, seeing it, and taking it into one's hands, one attains Bodhi." Therefore, they say that there is no need to meditate. That explanation is a concession and a gentle intention, not the true meaning. Because without practice and cultivation, one cannot abandon all obscurations, and one cannot attain omniscience. As it is said in the Noble Avatamsaka Sutra, Bodhisattva Dharma Protector replied to Bodhisattva Manjushri: "For what reason you asked, listen to me, son of Buddha. This true teaching of the Buddha, cannot be accomplished by merely hearing. Some are powerless like a flood, violently carried away, like beings dying of thirst, not practicing the Dharma is also like that. Just like giving food to many beings, but oneself dying of hunger, so it is not practicing the Dharma. Just like some good doctors, possessing all kinds of medicine, but dying from abdominal disease, not practicing the Dharma is also like that. Just like in a treasure house, counting many treasures, but not getting even half a penny, not practicing the Dharma is also like that. Just like having all kinds of happiness, surrounded by the king's palace and retinue, but suffering from lack of food and drink, so it is not practicing the Dharma. Just like a deaf musician, skilled in cymbals, songs, and dances, others are delighted by it, not practicing the Dharma is also like that. Just like a blind painter, painting in the middle of the market, but oneself cannot see anything, not practicing the Dharma is also like that. Just like a great ocean ship, saving many beings, but oneself dying in it.
