And, one cannot be completely liberated from discomfort and disturbance, cannot be completely liberated from the cycle of the six realms, and cannot be completely liberated from the aggregates of suffering. Considering these, the Thus-Gone One said: Because of hearing by following others, one will be liberated from aging and death. Since this is the case, if one wishes to abandon all obscurations and attain completely pure wisdom, one should abide in tranquility and insight and cultivate wisdom. Thus, in the Holy Jewel Heap Sutra, it is also said: By abiding in discipline, one obtains samadhi; having obtained samadhi, one should also cultivate wisdom; through wisdom, one obtains completely pure wisdom; because wisdom is completely pure, discipline is perfectly complete. Thus it is said. In the Holy Sutra on Cultivating Faith in the Great Vehicle, it is also said: Son of noble family, if one does not draw near to wisdom, do not speak of the faith of the Bodhisattvas in the Great Vehicle, and how the Great Vehicle arises. Son of noble family, in this way, the faith of the Bodhisattvas in the Great Vehicle, and whatever arises from the Great Vehicle, all of that should be known to arise from a non-distracted mind, truly contemplating meaning and dharma. Thus it is said. Merely insight that is separated from tranquility will cause the mind of the yogi to be distracted in objects, and like a lamp burning in the wind, it will not be stable. Therefore, the light of wisdom will not appear very clearly, so one should rely on both equally. Therefore, in the Holy Great Nirvana Sutra, it is also said: The Hearers do not see the lineage of the Thus-Gone One, because the component of samadhi is great and wisdom is small. The Bodhisattvas see it, but not clearly, because the component of wisdom is great and samadhi is small. The Thus-Gone One sees all, because he possesses tranquility and insight equally. Thus it is said. By the power of tranquility, just as a lamp is placed where there is no wind, the winds of conceptual thought will not shake the mind. By insight, one can destroy the net of all evil views.

Having abandoned all faults, others cannot overcome. As it is said in the Sutra of Moon Lamp: The power of tranquility makes it unshakeable, the power of insight makes it like a mountain. Therefore, if a yogi wishes to know and subdue all kinds of afflictions, he should strive for both tranquility and insight. As it is said in the Sutra of the Two Truths: Manjushri, how can afflictions be subdued? How can afflictions be fully known? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, when afflictions, in the ultimate truth of non-appearing wisdom, are known to be extremely empty, extremely without characteristics, extremely without substance, and extremely without self-nature, then, son of the gods, afflictions are thoroughly known. Son of the gods, it is like this: for example, when someone extracts the poison of a venomous snake, the poison of that venomous snake will be pacified. Son of the gods, likewise, thoroughly knowing the kinds of afflictions, those afflictions will be thoroughly pacified. The son of the gods asked: Manjushri, what are the kinds of afflictions? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, in the ultimate truth, the various discriminations towards all phenomena that are extremely unborn, unarisen, without substance, and without characteristics, those are the kinds of afflictions. The sutra extensively explains it as such. Therefore, being confused about all objects of knowledge, realizing the ultimate nature of all phenomena, one can subdue all obscurations. And the abandonment of afflictions depends on tranquility and insight, and certainly not on anything else. Therefore, one should strive to practice both. In this, one should generate the mind of enlightenment (bodhicitta). That mind of enlightenment is also of two kinds: conventional and ultimate. Among them, conventional bodhicitta refers to vowing with compassion to liberate all sentient beings, and for the benefit of beings, wishing for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, giving rise to the initial mind of desiring to become a Buddha. Furthermore, according to the ritual described in the chapter on the precepts of a Bodhisattva, abiding in the vows of a Bodhisattva, the wise...
