Relying on virtuous friends, extensively seeking learning, and contemplating properly. What is relying on virtuous friends? It is being learned, having clear speech, possessing compassion, and being able to endure hardships. What is extensively seeking learning? It is respectfully listening to the definitive and interpretable meanings of the twelve divisions of the Buddha Bhagavan's teachings. As stated in the "Noble Explanation of the Profound Meaning Sutra": "Not hearing the holy words as desired is an obstacle to Vipassana." From these two, the view arising from the hearing and thinking of Vipassana arises from a pure cause. As also stated in the "Noble Maitreya's Questions Sutra": "One who possesses learning will generate wisdom; one who possesses wisdom will pacify afflictions." What is proper contemplation? It is properly distinguishing the definitive and interpretable meanings of the sutras, etc. Thus, when a Bodhisattva has no doubts, they will be certain in their meditation. If not, it is like falling into a rope entangled with hesitant vines, or like a person walking to the edge of a cliff, unable to be certain anywhere. The yogi should at all times abandon unsuitable things such as fish and meat, and eat food in moderation. When the yogi meditates, they should first complete all desired tasks, and if they need to teach, they should do so in a pleasant place free from the thorns of enemies. Thinking, "I shall establish all sentient beings in the essence of Bodhicitta," with the intention to liberate all sentient beings, generate great compassion, and pay homage with the five limbs to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the ten directions. In front of the Buddha and Bodhisattva images, paintings, etc., or in another place, make offerings and praises to the best of one's ability, confess one's own sins, rejoice in the merits of all sentient beings, and sit on a very soft and comfortable seat, like the full lotus posture of the venerable Vairochana Buddha, or in a half lotus posture.
