It is taught that one should practice in order to realize such a state that is like the center of the sky at midday, free from the extremes of elaboration. By what means? By means of pure intention and perfect application. Intention, then, is of four types: not with the intention of proclaiming oneself, not with the intention of winning arguments, not with the intention of finding fault, but with the aim of completely liberating sentient beings, with the intention of overcoming the enemy of afflictions, with the intention of attaining omniscience, and with the intention of listening with respect for the Dharma and those who speak it. Application is of three types: application that is emptiness, possessed of great compassion, and embraced by bodhicitta, endowed with armor-like diligence; the main practice is the three spheres being completely pure, endowed with the six perfections; and afterwards, without clinging, completely dedicating the virtue to perfect enlightenment. It is taught that one should listen by such means. The characteristics of these should be examined in the Ornament of the Sutras, as explained by the teacher Ashvaghosa. Here, because it is only a brief statement, the first application is emptiness, etc., which is called 'Light Protector'. Being embraced by bodhicitta means wanting to enter the ocean of omniscience. Being endowed with emptiness means transcending the realm of ordinary beings. Being endowed with compassion means transcending the realm of hearers and self-realized Buddhas. Mentioning being endowed with armor means that the father's realm is omniscience. In the Sutra, the six perfections are explained as the father's realm. The main thing is the three spheres being completely pure, etc., which is called 'not cutting off the root', because one does things through diligence. The subsequent dedication is said to be for the sake of dedicating to omniscience, etc. Not being satisfied is like not being satisfied by the ocean. It is taught to train in completely practicing uncontaminated actions, abiding in mindfulness, and being without fault, etc. As it is said: Entering into the three kinds of wisdom, one will be freed from subtle faults and downfalls. Intention is

There are four: not with the intention of boasting oneself, but it is said to strive for accomplishment. Equanimity of mind is love and so on. Therefore, it should also be understood that it is not with the intention of winning arguments, etc., here it is just an illustration. What kind of self-nature should be listened to? It is said that one should be proficient in the five sciences. If it is said that the scriptures say that one attains enlightenment by one method, is this contradictory? It should be understood that it is said in terms of hidden meaning. How is it? Because it is said in reference to people with dull faculties, and to generating the worldly path, and to being led by others. Furthermore, it is said, "If one does not strive to master the five sciences, even the noble ones will not become omniscient." This is also contradictory. If it is said that it is the direct meaning, if the Buddha's words can have various hidden meanings, how can one explain it differently by determining the meaning of the decree? If that were the case, the meaning could not be determined, and it would become a fault of being completely meaningless. Therefore, what should be abandoned is shown from the opposite perspective, such as listening to noisy talk. Noisy talk refers to treatises of investigation. After listening, it is self-made talk. The rest are easy to understand. Although a little is said about things that can be beneficial, it is an obstacle because it harms the great meaning. Now, it will be explained with what kind of discipline one should listen. First, it must become an antidote to afflictions, so it is not with the intention of arguing, but it is said, "Son of the gods." Not clinging to all dharmas is abandoning the view of reality. Because reality is the place of bondage. How does it bind? If one clings to reality, one will conceive of self, and if there is self, one will know there is other, and from that all afflictions will arise. As it is said: If there is self, one knows there is other. From the division of self and other, attachment and hatred arise. These are connected with everything, and beings therefore accumulate sins. It's like that. So, by what method can one abandon clinging to reality? Why is that? If one strives and struggles to refute, that is conceptual thought, Bodhisattva.
