Therefore, it perishes without abiding in time. Because time is impermanent, it is subject to change, that is, because it changes with time. Because it is impermanent, it is short-lived, meaning it does not last long, and this should be explained in terms of before and after. Now, let's explain it specifically. Briefly, the impermanence of life ultimately leads to sin, as old age is unpleasant and therefore sinful. The impermanence of enjoyment is decay and destruction, decay meaning one's own decline. Destruction means due to sudden causes. Because the nature of everything is that, it is called a gate, meaning one goes there. Enjoyment and the body are like the assembly of parts of a chariot, so decay and joy are like being scattered separately. The impermanence of being without illness is accompanied by fear and harm, and so on. Congenital diseases are of the same nature as before, so it is a verbal fear, accompanied by fear. Sudden illnesses are like the prick of a weapon, arising immediately, and accompanied by harm. Because life is impermanent, death is the cause of mental suffering, so there is much sorrow. The body is the cause of suffering, so there is much confusion, meaning that sorrow and confusion, which are the causes of death, also arise from the body. What is death? When life, warmth, and consciousness abandon the body, there is no memory, like wood, falling to the ground and lying down. This is called death, and limbs and body parts fall to the ground. This body of the four great elements decays, and the breath and life are cut off. Bones, flesh, blood, tendons, and so on are scattered separately. Hair and abilities are scattered in directions and intermediate directions, and words such as scattering should be spoken. The term "destruction" means certainty. These also have no fixed time. In the sutras, because they ultimately converge on one gate, the subject is mentioned in order to answer one question. It is to dispel wrong views that impermanence is taught, that is, "therefore" and so on are said. Here, there are two types of impermanence: contemplating inner impermanence and contemplating outer impermanence.
