Thus it is. The means of abandonment is to abandon by relying on a true virtuous friend. Among them, the four maras are the maras of the Bodhisattva. Explaining the two kinds of actions means that the actions of the maras arise from the Perfection of Wisdom. The first action is that for those who newly enter the Mahayana, maras arise, hence it is said to abide in name. Because it is the first action, it is only in words. The Teacher said: Deceived by attachment to name. What kind of name is it? It is said, When you attain perfect enlightenment. Because it is the first action, it is also said that there are no signs of non-retrogression. The signs of non-retrogression are that even from the lower vehicle, fear arises from the evil realms, etc., and there is no retrogression, etc. Arrogance is pride arising from the words of the maras. Contempt is looking down upon. Therefore, the Bodhisattva who praises himself and disparages others should be known as being possessed by maras and narrow-minded. Thus it is. There are four times: arising from being separated from a virtuous friend, hence he is unskilled in means and devoid of wisdom. Separated from a virtuous friend. Not being taken care of by a virtuous friend, as it is said, saying much is for the sake of expression. What actions do they do? It is said that they proclaim the Hearer's Ground, etc. The root of downfall is killing, etc. The heaviest is cutting off until omniscience. As it is said: Going to hell is not a permanent obstacle to Bodhi. Hearers and Solitary Buddhas are obstacles to the Supreme Vehicle. Thus it is. For those who have conceptual thoughts, the arising of maras is said to be how much the son of the gods engages in actions, etc. Actions are the actions of the body, etc. Engagement is conceptual thought. Maras are afflictions, as it is said: The afflictions of a Bodhisattva are conceptual thoughts. Therefore, it is said. Wishing is desiring the result. Holding is engaging in the cause. Supreme holding is making it the main thing. Desire is aspiration. Consciousness is holding onto characteristics. Arrogance is seeing things as real. Fully marking is conduct. What is said about where to engage in actions, what is it?

How is it then? It is said, "Regarding the mind of enlightenment," and so on. Attachment is seeing things as real. Why is it said to be the work of a demon? Because seeing things as real is bondage, how can liberation be attained? This is a synonym. Giving, etc., motivated by seeing things as real, is also only bondage. It is said, "Being arrogant with giving," and so on. Being arrogant is seeing oneself, others, and dharma as real. Holding as supreme is thinking of it as a place of attachment. Holding is considering it as anger, etc. Laziness is effort. Signs are distraction. Going is behavior. Since one blames merely for the non-occurrence of manifest going, it is said to be fond of and devoted to solitary places, and to practice equanimity. If one abandons sentient beings, one will fall into equanimity. Because one is content with poor Dharma robes, etc., one is content with little. Because one does not want much, one is content. Among these, because of wanting little, one abandons the four wrong livelihoods: hypocrisy, flattery, hinting, and measuring by gain. Because of contentment, one abandons gain with gain. Because one makes the body, etc., fit for work, one is diligent. There are twelve qualities: three arising from food, three arising from clothing, and six arising from dwelling. Among these, the antidote to eating much is: eating in one seat, that is, the edge of the seat and the water's edge. The antidote to eating repeatedly is not accepting again. The antidote to attachment to good is begging, that is, accepting whatever is obtained and going in order. The antidote to attachment to good clothes is wearing rags, that is, due to discarding and degrading. The antidote to many is the three Dharma robes. The antidote to softness is wearing felt. The antidote to attachment to noise is
