English
It is the meaning of guiding. There are three stages of cultivating compassion: First, in order to stabilize the root, it is in the stage of ordinary beings; second, in order not to fall into the lower vehicle, it is in the stage of the path of seeing; third, in order not to abandon the benefit of sentient beings, it is in the stage of the eighth bhumi. Therefore, in order to symbolize the three stages of cultivation, it is said: "One should examine one's own mistakes separately, and have compassion for the mistakes of others." The so-called mistake is acting improperly, which is the cause of suffering. Now, in order to show the benefits, it is said that "wanting to manifest enlightenment" and so on are explained. Although what was said before is the benefit, it is still shown in other ways, that is, by higher realms and definite goodness. How is it shown? Explaining "wanting to manifest enlightenment" is to show the benefit of definite goodness. The benefit of higher realms is: generating great compassion, not being attached to body and life, one will be born in happy realms. Because one has not yet liberated oneself, one cannot liberate others, so one must not be attached to body and life, and so on. Now, the way to cultivate compassion will be shown: for parents and other lovely and dear ones who give benefit and happiness, and for those who act on the cause and reality of suffering, the mind that wants to eliminate their suffering is called compassion. By practicing in the way described earlier, one has the nature of compassion. To whom does one generate compassion? Sentient beings are divided into two types: those who are in actual suffering, and those who act on the cause of suffering. Among them, those who are in actual suffering are "suffering sentient beings" and so on. Therefore, lamenting, alas, like me, who is bound by various bonds, I cannot liberate myself, let alone others? Therefore, thinking, I must attain all-knowing wisdom in order to liberate them from suffering, so it is said to generate the mind of enlightenment. After generating the mind of enlightenment, one abides on the path of seeing, because one has obtained the accomplishment of benefiting oneself and others, so effort can obtain the Dharma nature.

Effort to accomplish, etc., is for accomplishing (this matter). After obtaining it, using it for the cause of suffering, such as miserliness, etc., is to make them abandon these. If the cause is not abandoned, the result will not be abandoned, therefore only the cutting off of the cause is mentioned. Because one is controlled by compassion, one will not turn back from Bodhicitta due to hardship. Otherwise, like in the Jataka of the Golden King, because compassion weakened, the mind of becoming a Pratyekabuddha arose, etc. Among these, conditioned existence, change, and the suffering of suffering are suffering, corresponding respectively to humans, gods, and the three lower realms. Because there is no accomplishment of benefit, it is without protection. Because there is no teaching of the supreme Dharma of renunciation, it is without a protector. Because there is no establishment in the three vehicles, it is without a refuge. Because there is no friend to eliminate suffering, it is without relatives. In the stages of hearing, thinking, and meditating, one strives with diligence and effort. Abandoning the body, etc., through various methods is asceticism. Because one returns from unfavorable circumstances, one applies the antidotes to miserliness, etc., therefore one establishes generosity, etc. Intolerable is the inability to endure. Harshness is what makes the body suffer. Heat is what makes the mind suffer. The ten Dharmas are generating Bodhicitta, striving to attain Dharmata, practicing asceticism, establishing oneself in the six Paramitas, and not being troubled or turning back due to suffering. Another method of cultivating compassion is, "Alas," etc. Among these, the object is sentient beings who are attached, etc. The method of cultivation is, "Having autonomy," etc. Among these, what was previously taught is a complete application, while here it is pure intention, therefore the difference between the two methods of cultivation lies in this. Among these, the explanation of the object of compassion cultivation that was previously taught is, "Alas," etc. "Alas," etc., are words expressing trust. Here, the individuals who experience suffering are of two types: those belonging to the householder side, and they also lack the cause of happiness accordingly.

Accumulation leads to suffering, inverted accumulation becomes the cause of suffering, and the exhaustion of accumulation without becoming a cause also leads to suffering. For householders, attachment to children and wives, etc., leads to suffering, and the decrease of children and wives, etc., also leads to suffering. Among these, attachment leading to suffering is: Called "slave of craving" and so on. Decrease leading to suffering is: called "no autonomy," because it becomes the control of unwanted others. Therefore, it will not be impoverished, that is, it will not be useless. So, how to cultivate compassion? Called "having autonomy" and so on, because one cannot obtain gods and humans, so one thinks of going wherever one is happy, which is obviously a wishful thought. For renunciants, suffering arises from the increase of afflictions and the decrease of precepts, etc., called "mutual discord" and so on. The chief of afflictions is hatred, why? Because it destroys the roots of virtue. It is also said below: "Anger is said to destroy the roots of virtue accumulated for hundreds of kalpas." Therefore, discord is disharmony, quarreling. Anger is mental disturbance. Hatred is anger. Harmful intent is hating sentient beings. Increasing is because it will increase. To establish patience in order to abandon it, called "in order to abandon," why? Because patience is the main cause of the fruit of precepts, as it is said: "Patience is the most supreme asceticism, the Buddha said that patience reaches Nirvana. If a renunciant harms others, and annoys other beings, he is not a Shramana." Like this. Due to separation from protection, precepts decline and suffering arises, it is said to be completely controlled by evil friends, etc. The decline of precepts and the decline of livelihood, etc., are evil friends, such as the ten kinds of evil friends proclaimed in the Ratnamegha Sutra. Sinful deeds are faults, because one enters into them due to separation from virtuous friends, for example, in the Udumvara Sutra, due to being deceived by evil friends.
