As for oneself, when will one attain Bodhi? These are two verses. For householders, it is patience, generosity, and discipline. Among them, the opposing aspects of patience are: anger, harmful intent, and jealousy. The opposing aspects of generosity are: jealousy and stinginess. Therefore, the willingness to abandon these is patience and generosity. "I have practiced pure conduct, I have abandoned sinful desires," this is discipline, which is the meaning of a layperson, because of being separate from sin. Therefore, the noble Nagarjuna himself said, "Generosity and discipline, the Dharma of patience is especially excellent, taught to householders, with the essence of compassion, constantly cultivate." Thus he said. For renunciants, "In the precepts and those, one should follow the Buddha and practice." Thus he said, because the main thing for accumulating merit is the precepts and those. Alternatively, the six perfections are the accumulation of merit, and to represent that, the precepts and those were taught. Also, the precepts are properly taken. Those are to transform the body into something special in order not to harm others, so virtues and so on are taught. The nature of discipline that benefits sentient beings is compassion and wisdom. "When I strive for enlightenment," and so on, speaks of not liking and not rejoicing, in order to generate a mind like a cowherd. Alternatively, liking is desire, and not rejoicing is not manifesting. For what reason? In order to fully ripen sentient beings and perfect the Buddha's Dharma, the first is "For the sake of one sentient being, one should also act." The second is "One should purify the Buddha-fields," hearing the name is fame, like appearing in a certain Buddha-field and so on. Thus, the benefits of upholding the precepts are, "I have prophesied to myself," and so on. The reason for the benefit is "superior pure intention." How does one know that the superior intention is pure? "I am among these guides in this domain," and so on. Thus, to summarize the meaning of the three types of discipline.
