We engage in proper attention in order to attain meaning. Among these, suffering, origin, cessation, and path are to be understood, abandoned, realized, and generated in the continuum. Therefore, first, one must have faith in the words of others, that is, desiring to hear the Dharma. What is the Dharma? It is to be practiced in stages, thereby realizing the truth as it is. The so-called gradual practice refers to discipline, listening, thinking, and meditation. Here, attention arises first based on listening. From proper attention arises correct meaning-object wisdom. From this, Dharma is obtained, and from this, wisdom increases greatly. When there is no individual awareness, how can one be certain? It is like this. Therefore, first, by generating a mind with aspiration in the continuum, one correctly holds the Bodhicitta. By taking the vows of entering the practice, it is practice. The ten types of consciousness included in the path of seeing are the Bodhicitta. The favorable conditions for entering that path have three aspects. To represent these three, the unchanging is thought. Actual practice with three fruits is practice. The method of accomplishing one's own benefit is the Paramitas. The method of accomplishing the benefit of others is the four means of attraction. The cause of accomplishing both benefits is skillful means, that is, the virtuous friend. The nature of the fruit is the Dharma previously mentioned, that is, the Buddha Dharma. The four paths are the Dharma of the Bodhisattva, and these are all gradual practices. Some say, why is the power mainly spoken of as the initial nature of forbearance, which is mainly faith, and the power of faith in the supreme Dharma, called power? What cannot subdue it? Because it possesses the Bodhicitta and so on, which will be explained below, it is called power, and because those can overwhelm discord, it cannot be subdued. Possessing the Bodhicitta and so on depends on complete holding, so it is the speech of others. The so-called from others refers to the fully enlightened Buddhas and so on. At that time, in the continuum of Dharma, the Buddhas have quiescence and wisdom.

In order to obtain the land, one will obtain vast teachings, just as it is thought. Now, the benefits will be explained, with Shariputra and others as the opening passages. Among these, what is explained by one sutra is also from the Bodhisattva Pitaka. What is explained through the gateway of many sutras is what is taught in the "Moon Essence Sutra" and the "Sutra Requested by the Dragon King Ocean." Among these, the first benefit is to generate great joy, to want to see the noble ones, and to want to hear the sacred Dharma. The benefit of faith is to have faith in karma and the ripening of karma. The benefit of desire is to abandon the paths of the ten non-virtuous actions, etc., because they are the cause of suffering. The characteristics of the ten non-virtuous actions will be explained below. The nature of actions and non-actions is also karma, and it is also the path to happy and unhappy realms, so it is the path of karma. What is the order of the arising of faith that possesses benefits? Those who possess joyful faith will develop confidence. If there is confidence, the desire for aspiration will arise, this is the order. Therefore, in order to make faith firm, the method will be explained: first, one should supplicate a virtuous spiritual friend who possesses the signs. Supplicate the teacher, saying, "O Master, in order for me to generate the mind of enlightenment, I beseech you to impart the method for establishing the root of faith. Out of compassion, please teach me." He also says, "Son of good family, it is excellent that you wish to make the root of all white dharmas—faith—firm." Therefore, you should remember the Tathagata who is complete with the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor signs, and in this way, you will generate pure joy in which the hairs of your body stand on end and tears flow. Or remember in the way that you have heard, or remember in the image of the assembly of noble beings, and it will appear just as it is. Also, constantly meditate and make it stable, these will be taught. Furthermore, son of good family, you should have faith in such a cause: son of good family, born from all white dharmas, the body of the Tathagata is the Dharmakaya, it is merit.
