Without causing entry, by whom are the afflictions known as such? To sentient beings who are completely defiled by afflictions, compassion is born, and the absence of self in beings, the absence of beings being manifest, is called the correct holder of discipline. In the Noble Sutra of Ajatashatru, the Blessed One declared: Ananda, I tell you, you should understand. If one who commits the five heinous crimes hears this category of the holy Dharma and enters into faith and understanding, I do not say that their karma is a karmic obscuration. This is a brief statement of the benefit of having faith in the profound Dharma; for a detailed explanation, one should listen to it in the Mahayana sutras. A Bodhisattva should not practice the profound nature of reality without being skilled in means. Thus, the union of means and wisdom is the correct practice of Bodhisattvas. As it is said in the Teaching of Vimalakirti: What is the wisdom that is bound by the absence of skillful means? It is like this: one definitely focuses on emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, but does not definitely focus on the signs and excellent marks, the adornment of the Buddha-field, and the maturation of sentient beings. This is the wisdom that is bound by the absence of skillful means. What is the wisdom that is liberated by skillful means? It is like this: one definitely focuses the mind on the signs and excellent marks, the adornment of the Buddha-field, and the maturation of sentient beings, and also familiarizes oneself with emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, without becoming weary. This is the wisdom that is liberated by skillful means. What is the means that is bound by the absence of wisdom? It is like this: abiding in all views and the arising of afflictions, latent tendencies, attachment, and anger, all the roots of virtue that are initiated are not dedicated to enlightenment. This is the means that is bound by the absence of wisdom. What is the means that is liberated by wisdom? It is like this: abandoning all views and the arising of afflictions, latent tendencies, attachment, and anger, all the roots of virtue that are initiated are

Completely dedicating and not being satisfied with it, this is the means grasped by wisdom, which is liberation. Thus it is said. All of these possessing means and wisdom are the realm of activity of Bodhisattvas. What is the realm of activity of Bodhisattvas? It arises from that (means and wisdom). It is not the realm of activity of ordinary beings, nor is it the realm of activity of noble ones; this is the realm of activity of Bodhisattvas. Samsara is also a realm of activity, but afflictions are not a realm of activity; conceiving of Nirvana is also a realm of activity, but complete Nirvana is not a realm of activity; the wisdom of the four truths is also a realm of activity, but making untimely true discriminations is not a realm of activity; inwardly discriminating individually is also a realm of activity, and deliberately taking birth in existence is also a realm of activity; extremely conceiving of non-birth is also a realm of activity, but entering into definite change is not a realm of activity; the bustle of all sentient beings is also a realm of activity, but the predispositions of afflictions are not a realm of activity; emptiness is also a realm of activity, and completely seeking qualities in all aspects is also a realm of activity; not accumulating is also a realm of activity, and completely accumulating all roots of virtue without interruption is also a realm of activity; completely seeking all the dharmas of tranquility and insight is also a realm of activity, and not falling into extreme tranquility is also a realm of activity; turning the wheel of Dharma, and showing complete great Nirvana is also a realm of activity, and not abandoning the conduct of Bodhisattvas is also a realm of activity; this is the realm of activity of Bodhisattvas. Thus it is said. In the Sutra of Subduing Mara it is also said: Son of the gods, furthermore, what is the correct practice, the most excellent correct practice of the Bodhisattvas? With the wisdom of wisdom, diligence is also non-existent, and with the wisdom of means, the practice is also for gathering all virtuous dharmas; with the wisdom of wisdom, no self, no sentient beings, no life, no nourisher, and no person are also practiced, and with the wisdom of means, the practice is also for completely maturing all sentient beings; with the wisdom of wisdom, all dharmas are without acceptance or rejection.
