suffering, and selflessness. If someone acts in that way, that is acting in the Prajñāpāramitā. To teach in that way is a pretense of Prajñāpāramitā by Kauśika. Then, what is not a pretense of Prajñāpāramitā? They teach in this way: Noble son, come here! Meditate on the Prajñāpāramitā, and from form up to all-knowingness itself, do not truly regard impermanence, suffering, selflessness, and impurity. Why is that? Because form is empty of its own nature, and what is the nature of form? It is without substance. What is without substance? It is the Prajñāpāramitā. And in that Prajñāpāramitā, the terms 'form is permanent' or 'form is impermanent' are not perceived. If form itself is not perceived there, how could permanence or impermanence exist? It is the same up to all-knowingness itself. To teach in that way is to teach what is not a pretense of Prajñāpāramitā. Again, they teach like this: Noble son, come here! Meditate on the Prajñāpāramitā, and do not utterly transcend any dharma, and do not abide in any dharma. Why is that? Because in this way, for the dharma of Prajñāpāramitā, there is no dharma to be utterly transcended, or no dharma in which to abide. In this way, all dharmas are empty of their own nature, and what is empty of its own nature? It is without substance. What is without substance? It is the Prajñāpāramitā. And in that Prajñāpāramitā, there is no dharma that is to be taken, to be abandoned, to be generated, or to be refuted. To teach closely in that way is to teach what is not a pretense of Prajñāpāramitā. Subhuti asked: Blessed One, by how much is there an object of focus in the Prajñāpāramitā? By how much is there no object of focus? The Blessed One replied: As much as there is duality, that much is an object of focus. Non-duality is without an object of focus. Subhuti asked: Blessed One, what is called 'duality'? The Blessed One

It was declared: From name and form to mind and dharma, and between enlightenment and Buddhahood, however much there is, that much is duality. The venerable Subhuti asked: World Honored One, is it non-apprehension to apprehend what is apprehended? Or is it non-apprehension to apprehend what is not apprehended? The World Honored One declared: Subhuti, apprehending what is to be apprehended is not non-apprehension, and apprehending what is not to be apprehended is also not non-apprehension. Subhuti, the equality of apprehension and non-apprehension is non-apprehension. Furthermore, the noble Subhuti asked: World Honored One, is it not by relying on the ultimate truth that you have manifested complete perfect enlightenment and attained perfect Buddhahood? The World Honored One declared: It is not. Subhuti asked: Is it by abiding in the opposite of that? The World Honored One declared: It is not. Subhuti asked: If it is not by abiding in the ultimate truth, nor by abiding in the opposite, then is it not the case that the Tathagata's attainment of complete perfect enlightenment is not a unity? The World Honored One declared: Subhuti, enlightenment has been completely and perfectly attained, but it does not abide in either the conditioned realm or the unconditioned realm. Furthermore, the World Honored One declared: Subhuti, without things, one cannot manifest complete perfect enlightenment of non-things. Subhuti asked: World Honored One, is it possible for non-things to manifest complete perfect enlightenment? The World Honored One declared: Subhuti, that is not possible. Subhuti asked: Is it possible for non-things to manifest complete perfect enlightenment of non-things? The World Honored One declared: Subhuti, that is not possible. Subhuti asked: Then, is it possible for things to manifest complete perfect enlightenment of things? It was declared: Subhuti, that is not possible. Asked: World Honored One, then will it not become without attainment and without realization? It was declared: There is realization, but not through these four kinds of manifestation. Asked: World Honored One, then realization

What kind of ground is it? The Blessed One said: For what there are no these elaborations, realization is without elaboration, without elaboration. Asked: Blessed One, what is elaboration? The Blessed One said: Is form permanent or impermanent, this is elaboration. Is form happiness or is form suffering, and I am self or selfless, peaceful or not peaceful, this is elaboration. Likewise, it is said in between all dharmas. Also arising from that, Subhuti, for example, a bird flying in the sky will not fall to the ground, although it dwells in the sky, it does not dwell there, nor does it abide. Subhuti, likewise, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva dwells in emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, if he directly realizes anything, he will fall into the ground of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, therefore, he does not directly realize emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, thus it is said. The fifth chapter is completed. In the Three Hundred Verses, the Tathagata also said: Subhuti, what do you think? Has the Tathagata fully realized the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment? Has the Tathagata taught any dharma? Subhuti replied: As I understand the meaning spoken by the Blessed One, the dharma that the Tathagata fully realized for unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, there is nothing. The dharma that the Tathagata taught, there is nothing. What is the reason for this? The dharma that the Tathagata taught is ungraspable and unspeakable, it is not dharma, nor is it non-dharma. What is the reason for this? Because the noble beings are distinguished by the unconditioned, thus it is said. The Tathagata, by the power of taming, in order to show the various paths of the Great Vehicle, therefore, teaches this profound nature of dharma. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: Mahamati Bodhisattva asked: The Tathagatagarbha spoken by the Blessed One in other sutras, the Blessed One is completely pure by its own nature of luminosity.
