If the Buddha's wisdom were extensively and correctly fully revealed only at the very beginning, then no sentient being would fully understand the Tathagata's wisdom. Therefore, the Tathagata revealed that wisdom through the discourse of rubbing wood, and that wisdom is without letters. The son of the gods asked: Manjushri, what is the discourse of rubbing wood? Manjushri replied: Son of the gods, anything is fine. Discourses on discipline and implements, discourses on joining with the pāramitās, and discourses on entering the path of enlightenment, these are called discourses of rubbing wood. The son of the gods asked: Manjushri, what is not a discourse of rubbing wood? Manjushri replied: Son of the gods, any discourse that is not about arising, ceasing, and abiding; any discourse that is not about leading and eliminating; any discourse that is not about fully proclaiming all afflictions; any discourse that is not about the benefits of purification; any discourse that is not about causing aversion to samsara; any discourse that is not about causing manifest joy in nirvana; any discourse that is not for the sake of fully knowing, for the sake of abandoning, for the sake of meditating, for the sake of manifesting; any discourse that is not for the sake of obtaining, for the sake of realizing, these, sons of the gods, are discourses that have essence. All dharmas are without object and without mind. In the Sutra of the Display of the Accumulation of Jewels, it is also said: The Tathagata spoke to Manjushri: Manjushri, the inconceivable realm, what is called the inconceivable realm? Manjushri replied: Blessed One, what is called the inconceivable realm is a realm that is without mind, that is not to liberate the mind, that is not to be measured by the mind, that is not to be distinguished by thought, but, Blessed One, mind itself is the inconceivable realm. Why is that? Because mind does not have mind, and mind itself is not mind, therefore mind is non-existent in its essence. As mind is, the absence of mind itself is not mind, O Blessed

Venerable One, this is an inconceivable realm. Furthermore, in that very sutra, the Thus-Gone One declared: Manjushri, have you not donned the armor of thinking, 'Thus shall I tame sentient beings'? Manjushri replied: Venerable One, if the realm of sentient beings neither diminishes nor increases, how then shall sentient beings be tamed? How shall they be liberated from suffering? Venerable One, those who have truly entered for the sake of taming the realm of sentient beings have truly entered into taming the sky. Those who strive to tame sentient beings are seeking to tame enlightenment. Venerable One, all dharmas are enlightenment, and Venerable One, enlightenment is neither entirely afflicted nor entirely purified. Therefore, the Venerable One asked: Manjushri, have you not truly entered for the sake of taming sentient beings? Venerable One, I have not truly entered for the sake of taming sentient beings or for the sake of afflicting sentient beings. What is the reason for this? Venerable One, if there were a sentient being, then the complete affliction of sentient beings and the complete purification of sentient beings could be distinguished. Venerable One, because there is no sentient being, the complete affliction of sentient beings and the complete purification are not distinguished. Venerable One, in that way, it is not contradictory to dependent arising. Venerable One, if there is not, then there is no complete affliction, nor is there purification. Venerable One, all dharmas arise dependently, therefore there is no inherent existence. Venerable One, whatever is completely afflicted or completely purified is the meaning of dependent arising, the meaning of non-existence. Venerable One, the wise understand the meaning of non-existence as the meaning of dependent arising, but the wise do not thus discriminate, thinking that non-existence is the meaning of dependent arising. In that meaning where there is no discrimination, there is neither complete affliction nor complete purification. Venerable One, it is like this: for example, a magician or a disciple of a magician builds a house, or the house that is built burns, burns intensely, burns completely, and flames spread
