And to teach the novices, and to serve them with affection like a lama. Furthermore, there is one dharma: namely, to be insatiable in making offerings and serving the Tathāgatas who are dwelling or who have passed into complete nirvāṇa. Furthermore, there is one dharma: namely, having realized that all dharmas are unproduced and unarisen by nature, to obtain great patience with regard to the dharma of non-arising. It is also said in the Bodhisattva Piṭaka that if a bodhisattva possesses four dharmas, he will not fall away from bodhi, and even after changing lives, he will become a cakravartin king, and according to his aspirations, all roots of virtue will be in accordance with him, and he will be powerful and mighty, Like a body that does not perish, he will also obtain the son of a cakravartin king. He will also obtain the four abodes of Brahmā, and having been born in the world of Brahmā, he will also obtain the power of Brahmā. What are the four? Here, when a bodhisattva sees a ruined stūpa of the Tathāgata, he is willing to restore it, and he offers some clay pellets for it. At the great crossroads of the road, in a place where many people gather, he builds a stūpa of the Tathāgata, or a stūpa, or a house, or a cairn, or an image of the Tathāgata, or other qualities of the Tathāgata, and other things to be remembered, such as the turning of the wheel of dharma, or manifestation, or the bodhi tree, or the subduing of the māras, or great miracles, or showing great nirvāṇa, or descending from the heavenly realm, if he sees that the śrāvaka sangha of the Tathāgata is not in harmony, he strives to reconcile them. When the teachings of the Tathāgata, the sacred dharma, are completely destroyed, he strives to never forget to protect a single verse. He upholds the dharma or the speaker of the dharma, and even if he abandons his body and life, he does not abandon the dharma. These are the four. It is also said in the Ārya Ratnamegha Sūtra that, son of good family, possessing ten dharmas, the bodhisattvas are those who uphold the sacred dharma. What are the ten? Namely, in the later age, in the later five hundred years, the sacred dharma is destroyed, and the teachings

When strife arises, when sentient beings enter evil paths, when the lamp of wisdom is extinguished, and when there is no teacher, one should uphold the vast, meaningful, and powerful sutras, which are like the mothers of all the holy Dharma. One should read, recite, and fully understand them, and also speak and teach them to others, truly and clearly explaining them. To those who enter into them, one should generate joy and faith, praise and benefit them, listen to the holy Dharma with a pure mind, regard the speakers of the Dharma as teachers, regard the holy Dharma as nectar, regard it as nourishing essence, regard it as the quintessence, and seek the holy Dharma without regard for body or life, and diligently practice it after finding it. Thus it is said. In the Sutra of Perfect Peace and Manifestation of Miracles, it is also said: If a Bodhisattva, a protector of patience, possesses four qualities, he will uphold the holy Dharma. What are the four? They are: not being attached to one's own happiness, bestowing happiness on others, having great compassion, and never being satisfied with seeking the Dharma. These are the four. Also, in the chapter on past conduct in the same sutra, it is said: In the place of King Immaculate Glory, the Bhagavan Tathagata Mount Meru, together with eighty-four thousand monks, was served and honored for a thousand years with all kinds of excellent and supreme provisions. Then, after a thousand years had passed, the Bhagavan Mount Meru Tathagata spoke to King Immaculate Glory: Great King, all the Dharma of generosity that you have given for a thousand years, and all the Dharma of generosity that you have offered to the Tathagata, even if all those merits were combined, they would not be comparable to even one-hundredth part of the root of virtue generated by a Bodhisattva's single breath while diligently seeking the Dharma, not even close to it. How much less, then, is the merit of reciting, diligently chanting, or even just teaching a single four-line verse that is perfectly in accordance with the Paramitas.

Needless to say, I cannot express the limits of that accumulation of merit. Let alone completely giving away wealth, if you, great king, were to accumulate all possessions for a thousand years and give them to one monk, and likewise give them separately to all monks, it would not compare to a Bodhisattva who hears a single verse of Dharma, diligently recites it, is respectful, desires to teach the Dharma, and with faith accepts the food offered, thinking, 'I shall completely seek the Dharma with this food.' By completely giving away wealth, even one-hundredth part of that root of virtue cannot be approached, not even one-hundredth part can be approached, so it is said. In the Sutra of the Secret of the Blessed One, it is also said: 'No matter how much the accumulation of merit of a Bodhisattva is spoken of, if one completely upholds the sacred Dharma, that merit is even more immense. The merit of upholding the sacred Dharma, even if the Buddha diligently speaks of it for countless eons, it will not reach its end.' So it is said. What is the sacred Dharma? As stated in the Sutra of the Garland of Glory and the Lion's Roar: 'That which is called the sacred Dharma is the supreme expression of the Great Vehicle. Why is that? Because all the virtuous Dharmas of the Hearers, the Solitary Buddhas, and the mundane and supramundane, are well distinguished by the Great Vehicle.' In the Sutra of the Perfect Collection of the Dharma, it is also said: 'Completely upholding the sacred Dharma is like this: receiving, holding, reciting, and contemplating the profound Sutras spoken by the Tathagata.' So it is said. Even if a Bodhisattva abides in the practice of any object of focus and makes offerings to the Tathagata for countless eons, they will not receive a prophecy, how much less will they attain enlightenment? As it says in the Sutra Requested by Brahma: 'Brahma, even if for countless eons or more than countless eons, one were to utter the names of those Tathagatas, and in whatever Dharma I practice the pure conduct, and practice the six perfections, those Tathagatas would not prophesy for him. Why is that? Because in this way, Brahma, I abide in practice.'
