Merely hearing and diligently reciting, those Bodhisattvas should all revere and serve the Bodhisattva who is diligent in truly abiding within. Thus, the Tathagata will rejoice and grant approval. What is the reason for this? Because the work of wisdom is a difficult task, it is manifestly superior, surpassing all of the three realms. Furthermore, the practice of Dharma is: From the Ratnakuta Sutra: "Light Protector, for example, a merchant who wishes to enter the great ocean, from the Isle of Jewels until he safely returns to his own country, greatly relies on the ship. Light Protector, similarly, a Bodhisattva who wishes to enter the ocean of all-knowing wisdom must also transcend all the grounds of ordinary people, Hearers, and Solitary Buddhas, until entering the realm of his own father. He must greatly rely on the ship of the six perfections." Thus it is said. From the Ajatashatru Sutra: "Not cutting off the root of the mind of all-knowing wisdom, that is causing the root to arise truly, which is diligence. For the sake of dedicating to the wisdom of all-knowing wisdom, not being satisfied with generosity; for the sake of being a protector for all sentient beings, not being satisfied with discipline; for the sake of seeking the body of the Buddha, not being satisfied with patience; for the sake of accomplishing all roots of virtue, not being satisfied with diligence; for the sake of non-objective yoga, not being satisfied with meditation; for the sake of taming all, not being satisfied with wisdom. For the sake of the Dharma, all enjoyment and livelihood are without fault." Thus it is said. Taking practice as the essential meaning, one should have equanimity towards all sentient beings. From the Noble Moon Lamp Sutra: "Young man, if a Bodhisattva possesses one Dharma, he will obtain these qualities and quickly realize the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment. What is this one Dharma? Young man, the Bodhisattva has equanimity towards all sentient beings, and a mind of benefit.

, and a mind without anger, and a mind without inequality, this is the only Dharma, so it is said. The Dharmas that obstruct meditation and recitation should also be completely abandoned, as it is said in the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness of the Holy Dharma: "Sons of good family, these ten are the obstructions to the meditation and recitation of Bodhisattvas. What are the ten? They are: listening to noisy talk, drawing pictures, composing poetry, the assembly of stars, contemplating the stars, possessing the food one has obtained, contemplating the transformation of wealth like a flesh-eating demon, relying on kings and not asking the wise, inviting pleasure as a guest, and dwelling in a haunted place. These are the ten." So it is said. In the Sutra Requested by Holy Brahma, it is also said: "Son of the gods, practicing Dharma, practicing Dharma, means not practicing all Dharmas, this is practicing Dharma. Why? Because not practicing Dharma is not doing Dharma. Not doing and not discriminating doing, this is practicing Dharma." So it is said. Those who wish to practice the Dharmas should completely abandon gain and respect, as it is said in the Sutra on Encouraging Superior Intentions: "Gain and respect generate ignorance, thereby destroying mindfulness, generating deceit in order to accomplish one's own benefit, generating arrogance, pride, and conceit, one should examine that this is not the permission of all Buddhas. Gain and respect are the root of not falling into evil destinies, one should examine that this is the cause of losing virtuous roots. Gain and respect are that one was previously respected, but later not respected, abandoning meditation and the immeasurable, causing sentient beings to fall into hell, the animal realm, and the world of Yama, one should separately examine that this is the same as the behavior of excessive conduct. Gain and respect, because they quickly leak away, one should examine them like thorns. Gain and respect, because they are difficult to liberate from, one should examine them like mud." So it is said. Having examined separately, one should focus one's mind on contentment, truthfully

It comes from the authoritative teachings: Under a banyan tree, a large flock of sheep gathered. Among the flock, a sheep that ate dung went to the dung pit to eat dung. It ate the dung to its heart's content, then piled up a heap of dung in front of it, sat there turning its head, and in this way despised the other sheep. Similarly, some monks are overwhelmed and their minds are seized by gain, respect, and fame. They enter towns, cities, and villages for alms, and there they eat clean and delicious food to their heart's content. The next day, they bring back food that is suitable for eating and say to the monks, "Venerable ones, I have eaten this clean and delicious food to my heart's content. I don't need this food, especially the kind that should be thrown away. If you want, eat it!" In this way, they despise the other worthy monks. Monks, similarly, gain, respect, and fame are unbearable, as the Buddha has extensively said. Deceit and trickery should also be completely abandoned. It comes from the Unborn Enemy Sutra: Until the mind of omniscience arises, there are two obstacles. What are these two? They are deceit and trickery. There are also two foundations: honesty and non-deception. The Buddha said this. Those who wish to diligently practice should rely on virtuous friends. Practice comes from the mouth of virtuous friends. How do we know? Because it comes from the sutras, from the liberation of "Glorious Birth" and "Glorious Wisdom": All the practices of Bodhisattvas, hearing them, depend on virtuous friends. All the complete qualities of Bodhisattvas come from virtuous friends. All the roots of virtue of Bodhisattvas are generated by virtuous friends. All the diligent practices of Bodhisattvas depend on virtuous friends. All the superior pure intentions of Bodhisattvas have virtuous friends as their root. All the accumulated merits of Bodhisattvas are protected by virtuous friends. Virtuous friend!
