One should consult the Vinaya and Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior, etc. The benefit of rejoicing in others' generation of bodhicitta is from the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra: It is possible to know the number of weighing all the realms of the world. The benefit of encouraging others to generate bodhicitta should be consulted in the Mahayana Sutras and Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior, etc. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions do not know it. The accumulation of merit from rejoicing in others' generation of bodhicitta cannot be known, as it is said in the sutras, and one should consult the sutras extensively. The fault of obstructing others' generation of bodhicitta is from the Noble Sutra on the Complete Preservation of the Roots of Virtue: Sharadvati's son, whoever wants to obstruct the generation of bodhicitta, that obstructer will not have the opportunity to attain nirvana. Also, as stated in the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra, killing as many arhats as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River in three thousand great thousand worlds, and committing the five heinous crimes, is a greater sin. Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior also says: Whoever obstructs the merit of generating bodhicitta, causing sentient beings to become inferior, their evil destinies are endless. Thus it is said, and one should consult the sutras extensively. Developing bodhicitta is to develop that mind into three types of bodhicitta: the discipline of bodhicitta vows, the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas with bodhicitta, and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings with bodhicitta. For example, just as the waxing moon gradually increases, so too will this mind increase. That is: Vast and extensive, pure, greatly benefiting and accomplishing, surpassing only with goodness, pure intention is superior intention. Thus it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras. Superior intention is like a new moon, and it is also called Entering Bodhicitta. From the chapter on the discipline of a bodhisattva: There are three types of discipline: the discipline of nature, the discipline of habituation, and the discipline of proper acceptance. Among them, the discipline of nature is: all sentient beings are of the same kind, and

They are holders of the Tathagatagarbha and belong to the lineage of the Mahayana. Although they are fortunate individuals who can achieve realization through practice, they are covered by four types of faults. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Afflictions, habits, bad friends, poverty, and being controlled by others, in short, the faults of lineage, are truly said to be four types." Therefore, individuals with such lineage naturally possess great compassion and are inherently endowed with the complete qualities of the Paramitas, hence they are called naturally virtuous. The discipline of habituation is of three types: having extensively practiced the Mahayana since previous lives, having practiced moderately, and having practiced from countless eons. Therefore, Maitreya said: "Revering the Buddhas, generating roots of virtue in them, being protected by virtuous friends, this is a vessel for listening. Serving and honoring the Buddhas, practicing generosity and discipline, etc., the noble ones know them as vessels." Thus it is said. Among these, the discipline of proper acceptance is that the Acharya, having thoroughly examined with three types of observation, should bestow the discipline according to the order of the vessels. To the aforementioned individuals, the four root downfalls of their Pratimoksha vows along with their retinue, the four similar to the root downfalls of the Mahayana, and the forty-six misdeeds should be given. To the intermediate individuals, the vows of the intermediate individuals should be given. On top of that, the eighteen root downfalls of the noble Akashagarbha and the fourteen harms spoken by Acharya Shantideva should be given. To the third type of individuals, on top of those, all the precepts of the Bodhisattvas on the path of accumulation mentioned in the noble Sutra of Seven Hundred and the Mahayana Sutras should be protected. For the path of accumulation, the discipline of vows is the main thing. For the path of preparation, the discipline of accumulating virtuous Dharmas is the main thing. For the path beyond the world, the discipline of benefiting sentient beings is the main thing. If we calculate the continuum of one individual, the path of accumulation is small.
