Being skilled in 'la' means taking the suffering of others as one's own, eliminating the suffering of others with one's own suffering, exchanging one's own happiness with the suffering of others, and constantly being tormented by suffering due to the suffering of others. As it is said in the great tantra of Supreme Wisdom: "A Bodhisattva does not abandon his own happiness, nor is he weary of his own suffering, but his mind suffers from the suffering of others, and a Bodhisattva rejoices in the happiness of others." Thus it is said. Confessing the sins of others as one's own sins, rejoicing in the virtues of others as one's own virtues, dedicating one's own virtues to others, and completely dedicating the virtues of others as one's own virtues. Being skilled in external methods means maturing all sentient beings through the four means of gathering, the five sciences, the ten virtues, the six perfections, the four immeasurables, etc., including gathering, subduing, enticing, threatening, placing on firm ground, and rewarding with gifts. Through the tenth dedication of the Noble Vajra Banner, the "Samantabhadra's Conduct Prayer," the "Twenty Aspirations" composed by Master Nagarjuna, and the eleven verses that came from the Saltwater River, one should not abandon sentient beings. In the "Sutra Requested by Noble Kashyapa," it says: One should not lie even for the sake of one's life, and one should abide with the intention of benefiting sentient beings without deception, generate the perception of a teacher towards those who have generated Bodhicitta, and whatever beings are matured, they should all be matured in the unsurpassed Great Bodhi, and not in the stages of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Similarly, in the "Sutra Requested by Noble Avalokiteshvara," it also says: Sons of good family, a Bodhisattva who has just generated Bodhicitta should train in seven dharmas: even with conceptual thought, one should not indulge in desire, let alone the union of the two organs. Even in dreams, one should not associate with evil friends, and one should be without attachment in the mind, like a bird, and without arrogance and self-grasping through being skilled in means and wisdom.
