What is there? If others praise me, what is there to be unhappy about being slandered? Thus it is said. And again in that same text it says: They slander those who have not obtained, they speak unpleasant words to those who have obtained. How can joy arise from those who are difficult to associate with by nature? Thus it is said. Furthermore, in the Sutra of Inciting the Superior Intention of the Noble One, it says: Since the many faults of gain and respect have been shown, one should understand from that. Here, is attachment to disciples and grand-disciples, etc., not the very nature of compassion? How is it proper to abandon it? It is not, for it is a criticism of compassion that is not timely. Without having attained direct realization, one cannot fully ripen disciples, but only binds oneself. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: The inclinations of beings are various, even the Buddhas cannot please them, how much less can wretched ones like me? Therefore, abandon worldly thoughts. Thus it is. Again, in that same text it says: If one becomes attached to sentient beings, it completely obscures reality, and also destroys the mind of renunciation, and ultimately becomes grief and suffering. With mere thought, this life will pass meaninglessly, and impermanent friends will also destroy the eternal Dharma. Thus it is said. Therefore, one should not be attached to disciples and so forth through the connection of results, and to both the connections of worldly terms through mere affection, but should abide in solitude. One should also abandon the inherent attachment to existence. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by Noble Good Arms: Thinking of the world as like a tiger, a snake, and fire, abandon it and rejoice in solitude. The characteristics of women, the characteristics of men, and examining medicine and elephants, or astrological calculations, examining weapons or examining horses, self-making, or learning and reading evil treatises, should be abandoned. Thus it is. Again, in that same text it says: Elephants, horses, crows, dogs, and prostitutes, burning corpses, cemeteries, those who are born, women, daughters, children, goats, sheep, etc., fighting, gambling should not be watched. False talk and relying on autonomy, and talk of war, giants, and young people, stories and jokes, and former historical stories, talk of desire and slander should not be done. The mantra practitioner diligently recites secret mantras (藏文:སྔགས་པ་གསང་སྔགས་,梵文天城体:mantra guhyamantra,梵文罗马拟音:mantra guhyamantra,汉语字面意思:咒语 秘密咒语), and the summer month

The three should dwell alone. Thus it is said. Again, in that very text, it says: Bound by karma, without self-mastery, without protector, without refuge, life after life, the suffering of the body follows closely, good and non-good follow in its wake. Separated from livelihood, friends, and companions, encountering the unpleasant and tormented by desire, suffering from the evils of birth, old age, and death, even if one goes to all places, it is not avoided. Flesh, flies, heat, cold, hunger, and fatigue, etc., wherever one goes, it is suffering itself. When the mind of manifest joy arises towards places, one should dispel those various thoughts. When attachment is strong, one should dispel it by contemplating the impurity of flesh and fat, skin, bones, and skeletons. One should extinguish hatred with the water of love and compassion, and one should counteract ignorance with the path of dependent origination. Thus it is said. The noble Nāgārjuna also said: After showing the many faults of the world, thus all these are impermanent and without self, without refuge, without protector, and without a place to rely on. In samsara, which is like a banana tree without essence, O best of men, may you generate aversion. Thus it is said. Furthermore, relying on texts such as the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*, the *Advice to Seven Youths*, the *Friendly Letter*, and the *Letter to a Disciple*, one should abandon the attachment that arises naturally to existence. This is a branch for generating renunciation. Having abandoned the unfavorable aspects in this way, one should remember the qualities of samādhi. Here, there are two kinds of qualities: those that can be experienced in this life and those that are other than that. What are the two? They are: the body dwells in comfort, speech dwells in comfort, the mind dwells in comfort, all those who protect the Dharma rejoice, obtaining this human body is meaningful, one contemplates the kindness of the teacher, parents, and guru, non-humans cannot harm one, diseases decrease, lifespan increases, at the time of death there is no regret, one is praised by the wise, food, drink, dwelling, medicine for sickness, and clothing are easily obtained, afflictions and actions do not harm one. These are the qualities of the first kind. One is born in the Buddha-field that one desires, one abandons the three lower realms, and one is not born in the eight unfavorable conditions.
