It is said in the Sutra, "Vajra Peak": "One's own mind is the demon." One's own mind is the obstacle. Abandon all discriminations. All obstacles arise from discrimination. Thus it is said. Furthermore, the means of subduing the works of demons should be known from the "Inquiry of the Noble Given by the Sorrowless" and the "Lion's Prophecy." This is the branch to be abandoned. Whoever has not generated wisdom by the nature of hearing cannot subdue the works of demons, nor can he keep his mind in equilibrium. Therefore, hearing itself should be done first, as it is said: "Hearing is what expands wisdom. If there are thought and the two, then one should apply oneself to meditation. From that, one obtains unsurpassed accomplishment." Thus it is said. Also, in the chapter on "The Ten Aspects of the Noble Bodhisattva," it is said: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, the Bodhisattva who is a beginner should first be encouraged to recite. After hearing much, he should be encouraged to dwell in solitude." Thus it is said. That meaning is also spoken of in the "Inquiry of the Noble Fierce One" and the "Noble Jewel Lamp." Similarly, in the "Noble Array of Trees," it is said: "First, desiring to listen, attending to the lama, honoring, being patient, and having done that, thoroughly contemplating the dharma that is without inherent existence, one who gains meditation. The Sugata himself will realize, satisfying the thirst of beings. Practicing such a dharma, one will quickly attain the state of Sugata." Thus it is said. Similarly, in the "Noble Sutra of the Individual Liberation of the Hearers," it is said: "Those who have heard much in the midst of the forest, the dwelling of those whose youth has passed, is blissful." Thus it is said. Therefore, the wisdom of hearing itself is what precedes the accomplishment of meaning. This is the branch of what precedes. Thus, that Bodhisattva who possesses hearing should be prevented from engaging in teaching the Dharma, for the Victorious Ones have not spoken of benefiting others by merely hearing much without having attained direct realization. Therefore, in the chapter on "The Ten Aspects of the Noble Bodhisattva," it is said: "The Bodhisattva who is a beginner should first be encouraged to recite. After hearing much, he should be encouraged to dwell in solitude. In extreme solitude."

, one should be completely urged to become a virtuous friend. After becoming a virtuous friend, one should be urged to be happy. After being happy, one should be urged to know the time. After knowing the time, one should be completely urged to be fearless. After being fearless, one should be completely urged to know the meaning. After knowing the meaning, one should be completely urged to follow the Dharma. After following the Dharma, one should be urged to be without ignorance. After being without ignorance, one should be completely urged to be good at distinguishing. Why is that? Because one should focus more on placing great compassion first for all sentient beings, and wherever one hears, one should apply oneself to it, and one should not become a cause for clinging to oneself and others. O sons of the conquerors, this is the good distinction of the Bodhicitta of the first practitioner, so it is said. This meaning was also asked by the noble Fierce One, and it is also stated in the Jewel Lamp Treatise. Furthermore, in the Sutra of Encouraging Higher Intentions, it also says: I have lost my practice, what should I do now? Like a child who regrets when he is about to die. And so on, having heard many things, speaking the Dharma without relying on a solitary place, many faults are spoken of, so one should examine them there in detail. Therefore, one should not speak the Dharma merely by hearing a lot, but one should turn away from it and only benefit beings after obtaining direct realization. This is the limb to be turned away from. Thus, one who turns away from speaking the Dharma and abandons elaboration should think like this: I have not yet fully mastered the aggregates, nor have I fully mastered the realms and sources. If one does not master them, one will not attain liberation. As it is said: If one does not strive in the five fields of knowledge, even the supreme noble ones will not become omniscient. Therefore, in order to subdue others or to take them in, or in order to know everything oneself, one should strive in them. Because it is taught like this. Furthermore, if one develops desire for the combination of teacher and disciple, gain, respect, fame, sound, and the pleasure of verses, then that is certainly
