It should be prevented (the fault of not practicing the Dharma). If one does not practice after hearing the Dharma, and thus does not attain enlightenment, then it should not be praised. As it is said in the noble 'Tree Trunk Adornment Sutra': 'This teaching of the perfectly enlightened Buddha, cannot be accomplished by merely hearing. For example, someone in a river, who is powerless and carried away by the water, thus dies of thirst in the water, so too is it with not practicing the Dharma.' It also says: 'For example, the great ocean is beneficial, able to liberate all sentient beings, but one dies in the ocean itself, so too is it with not practicing the Dharma.' And so on, it extensively explains the faults of not practicing and not attaining enlightenment, the details of which can be learned from that sutra itself. Therefore, one should make the mind abide as much as possible, be satisfied after hearing the instructions, and should ask the lama about the various states that arise immediately in the mind and practice them. Do not be confused by the names of the seven valid cognitions, the four grammars, the seven Abhidharmas, and the grounds of Yoga practice. As it is said in 'The Reasoning of True Meaning': 'Whoever does not drink the nectar water of the guru's oral instructions, does not drink the cool water that eliminates suffering, this person vainly studies many scriptures, and ultimately dies of thirst in the wilderness.' Thus it is said, even if one strives for countless eons, those names cannot be exhausted, and in the end, one will only exhaust one's life. Therefore, it is also said in the 'Later Supreme Bliss': 'The yogi is an outsider, his elements are all exhausted, therefore abandon all external objects, and abide in the joy of yoga.' Similarly, it is also said in 'The Reasoning of True Meaning': 'Even if one travels through all realms, suffering from torment, it is difficult to encounter the nature that is born together.' Thus it is said. Being proficient in the five aggregates, the twelve sources, and the eighteen elements, should also be realized at the same moment through the power of yoga, and not through learning them sequentially. As it is said in the noble 'Vajra Pinnacle Sutra': 'From this, wisdom arises, hearing also gives rise to wisdom.' And as it is said in the 'Inquiry of the Noble Good Arm': 'One should uphold the words and meanings, and be proficient in poetry and writing.' Thus it is said. These also arise from the power of yoga.

This is not a stage of gradual learning. It is also stated in the Abhidharma, "Exhaustive knowledge is also tainted." The suffering of desiring gain and respect should be understood from the limb of renunciation. This is the limb of cutting off suffering. Since it is not possible to purify through meditation without generating renunciation towards samsara in every way, one should generate renunciation towards it. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, "First, one should seek tranquility, which is easily accomplished by those without attachment to the world." Here, attachment arises from being overly fond of relatives and hating enemies; attachment to being without illness and to youth, etc.; attachment to inherently existing phenomena; and attachment to gain, respect, fame, sound, and poetry should all be abandoned. As it is said in the questions of the noble Good Army, "For a while, an enemy may become a friend, and a friend may become an enemy. Likewise, some may become neutral, and that neutral one may become an enemy. Therefore, knowing that friends change, the wise should never be attached. The mental discriminations of liking relatives should be reversed, and one should abide comfortably in virtue." The noble Nagarjuna also said, "A father can be a son, a mother can be a wife, beings who were enemies can be friends, and because there are reversals, there is nothing certain in samsara." Therefore, one should completely abandon attachment to relatives and enemies. Similarly, "Being without illness is impermanent, youth is not eternal, long life is impermanent, wealth is not eternal." As it is said, one should also completely abandon attachment to these. One should also abandon attachment to gain, respect, fame, sound, and poetry. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, "I have gained much, I am respected, many people like me." If such pride arises, fear will arise after death. And again, in the same text, "Even if much gain is obtained, and fame and renown arise, with the accumulation of gain and fame, there is no knowing where one will go. If others slander me, what is the use of praise?"
