If it is not, it will not give rise to true wisdom, nor will it abandon the obscurations of afflictions. The Sutra of the Play of Mañjuśrī also states: Daughter, how does a Bodhisattva conquer the battlefield? Answer: Mañjuśrī, if one examines, what is it that all dharmas are unobtainable? Therefore, the yogi should open the eye of wisdom and defeat the enemies of affliction with the sword of wisdom. In order to abide in a state of fearlessness, one should not close one's eyes as before. The Holy Samādhirāja Sutra also states: If one individually understands the selflessness of dharmas, if one individually examines them, if one meditates, that itself is the cause for obtaining the fruit of nirvāṇa. Other causes cannot bring about its cessation. The Compendium of Sutras also states: If I abide in the yoga of vipaśyanā, but others do not enter the yoga of vipaśyanā, that is the work of Māra. Vipaśyanā is the very nature of true individual examination, as stated in the Holy Ratnamegha Sutra and the Saṃdhinirmocana Sutra. The Holy Ratnamegha Sutra also states: Having examined with vipaśyanā, realizing the absence of inherent existence is entering into the signless. The Holy Laṅkāvatāra Sutra also states: Mahāmati, because one examines with wisdom, one does not understand the self-characteristics and general characteristics. Therefore, it is said that all dharmas are without inherent existence. If one does not engage in true individual examination, then the various modes of true individual examination that the Bhagavan has thus proclaimed in these sutras would also be contradictory. Therefore, it is reasonable to say that I am of little wisdom, of little diligence, and unable to fully seek much learning. Because the Bhagavan praises much learning, one should not abandon it at any time. The Brahma's Inquiry Sutra also states: Those whose minds are engaged in inconceivable dharmas are not in accordance with the proper way. For those dharmas that are unborn in the ultimate sense, completely considering them to be born, the Śrāvakas

Just as with clothes and the like, if one thinks of them as being of the nature of impermanence and suffering, then the mind will fall into the extremes of superimposition and denigration, becoming improper attention. It is in order to prevent this that it is said in this way. But it is not to prevent correct discrimination, because that is the Sutra Pitaka, and it is said in all the scriptures. Just as Brahma asked, it is also said in the "Two Chapters," where the Bodhisattvas requested, saying: "If one thinks of all dharmas with the mind, but does not cling to them or lose them, for the sake of that one, he is called a Bodhisattva." And again, in that same text, it says: "How is one endowed with diligence?" The answer is: "When, having examined it with the wisdom of omniscient knowledge, it is not found." And again, in that same text, it says: "Those who properly discriminate dharmas are intelligent." And again, in that same text, it says: "They thoroughly distinguish dharmas as being like illusions and mirages." Therefore, wherever one hears words such as "inconceivable," if some people think that they can understand the meaning of it merely by hearing and thinking, in order to prevent the arrogance of those people, it is shown that dharmas must each be known personally. It should be understood that improper attention is also to be prevented, but not correct discrimination. If it were not so, it would contradict a great many reasons and scriptures, as was said before. Moreover, whatever is understood by the wisdom arising from hearing and thinking should be meditated upon with the wisdom arising from meditation; otherwise, it is not, just as one first points out the racecourse and then lets the horse run. Therefore, one should properly discriminate. Even though it is the nature of discrimination, since it is the nature of proper attention, non-conceptual wisdom will arise from it; therefore, since one desires that wisdom, one should rely on it. If the fire of non-conceptual true wisdom arises, just as fire arises from rubbing two pieces of wood together, and the fire burns those two pieces of wood, so too will it be burned by those two later on, the noble...
