One should diligently strive to accumulate the collection of merit, such as offerings and generosity. If sentient beings, through the power of virtuous and non-virtuous actions generated by mental discrimination, experience results such as in the heavens and wander in samsara. Those who do not think of anything and do not do anything will be completely liberated from samsara. Therefore, do not think of anything, and do not engage in virtuous deeds such as generosity. If someone thinks that engaging in generosity and other virtuous deeds is only a teaching given to guide foolish people, and also says so, then they have abandoned all of the Great Vehicle. Because the root of all Great Vehicles is the Great Vehicle, if one abandons it, then one has abandoned all vehicles. To say, "Do not think of anything," is to abandon the wisdom that is the nature of perfect discernment. Because the root of perfect wisdom is perfect discernment, if one abandons it, one abandons the wisdom that transcends the world, because the root has been severed. If one says, "One should not engage in virtuous deeds such as generosity," then one has abandoned the extremely skillful means of generosity and so on. In short, like this, means and wisdom are the Great Vehicle. As it is said in the Noble Gaya Head Mountain Sutra: "The path of the Bodhisattvas, in brief, is twofold. What are the two? They are means and wisdom." The Noble Secret of the Tathagata also states: "With these two, means and wisdom, all the paths of the Bodhisattva will be summarized." Therefore, abandoning the Great Vehicle is to commit a great obscuration of karma. Therefore, abandoning the Great Vehicle, having little learning, holding one's own views as supreme, not honoring wise people, not understanding the teachings of the Tathagata, destroying oneself and destroying others, words that contradict reason and scripture and are tainted with poison, should be completely abandoned far away like poisonous food by wise people who desire what is good for themselves. Thus, if he abandons perfect discernment, then the Dharma called 'Extremely Good Discrimination,' the true Bodhi

Even the excellent limbs of enlightenment will be abandoned. Without proper discernment, by what means can a yogi establish the mind, which has been manifestly attached to and accustomed to objects such as form since beginningless time, in the state of non-conceptualization? If it is said that one enters into it by not having mindfulness and attention towards all phenomena, that is also not reasonable. Because without proper discernment, it is not possible to make all the phenomena experienced unremembered and unattended to. If one thinks, "I will not remember these phenomena, I will not attend to them," and meditates in this way, meditating on not having mindfulness and attention towards those phenomena, then at that time he will remember those phenomena very much and attend to them very much. If merely not having mindfulness and attention is called not having mindfulness and attention, then at that time it is necessary to examine in what way those two disappear. Because non-existence also cannot become a cause, by what does one transform from the absence of signs and the absence of attention into the state of non-conceptualization? If merely because of that one becomes non-conceptual, then fainting also enters into the state of non-conceptualization because of not having mindfulness and attention. Without proper discernment, there is no other way to make mindfulness and attention disappear in another way. Even if mindfulness and attention have disappeared, if there is no proper discernment, how can one enter into the state of non-self-nature of phenomena? Even if phenomena are merely abiding in emptiness of self-nature, if there is no discernment, one will not realize the emptiness of those phenomena. Without realizing emptiness, one will not be able to abandon obscurations. If that happens, then all beings will be naturally liberated at all times. Furthermore, if that yogi loses mindfulness towards all phenomena, or if mindfulness and attention do not arise due to ignorance, then at that time, because he is very ignorant, how can he become a yogi? Without proper discernment, if he cultivates not having mindfulness and attention, then he is cultivating foolishness itself.
