When I see something, I should examine its nature, calm the distraction, and settle the mind on it itself. When seeing displeasure towards it, in order to see the merits of samadhi, I should cultivate joy towards it. In order to see the faults of distraction, I should completely pacify displeasure. If, because of being oppressed by dullness and sleep, the aspect is not clear, and the mind sinks or is suspected of sinking, then I should remember extremely joyful objects, such as the form of the Buddha, or remember the aspect of light, pacify the sinking, and grasp that sole reality very firmly. When the yogi is like a blind person, or like a person entering darkness, or like closing the eyes, and cannot grasp that sole reality very clearly, then it should be known that this is sinking and lack of vipassana. If, when attachment arises towards previously experienced objects, causing intermittent mental agitation, or seeing suspected agitation, then I should remember unpleasant objects such as impermanence, and pacify the agitation. After that, I should also strive to focus the mind on that sole reality, just like striving to put fire into fire. When, like a distracted person, or like a monkey, the mind cannot abide, then it should be known that this is agitation and lack of shamatha. If, when being separated from sinking and agitation, entering into equality, and because of spontaneously entering, the mind becomes very clear about that sole reality, then I should relax effort and maintain equanimity, and it should be known that at this time the path of shamatha and vipassana united has been accomplished. Also, when cultivating vipassana causes wisdom to become very strong, because of the lack of shamatha, just like putting a candle in the wind, the mind will shake, causing the inability to see that sole reality very clearly, therefore, at this time I should cultivate shamatha. If the part of shamatha is too strong, just like a person deluded by sleep, one also cannot see that sole reality very clearly, therefore, at this time I should also cultivate wisdom. When, like two oxen yoked together and advancing together, both advance together, as long as there is no harm to body and mind
