The detailed benefits of this samadhi should be understood from that very sutra. Alternatively, one should cultivate tranquility by placing the mind on that which encompasses all dharmas in various ways, thereby thoroughly pacifying agitation, dullness, and so forth. In short, all dharmas are encompassed by the distinction between the corporeal and the incorporeal. Among these, the corporeal are gathered into the aggregate of form. The aggregates of feeling and so forth are of the nature of the incorporeal. Because childish beings cling to the apprehension of things like 'I exist,' their minds become inverted, and they wander completely in samsara. In order to eliminate their inversions, one should manifest great compassion towards them. In order for the yogi to accomplish tranquility and insight and realize that very thing, one should then cultivate insight. Correctly discriminating is called insight. Correct refers to the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena. Among these, the selflessness of persons is the very absence of a self and what belongs to a self in the aggregates. The selflessness of phenomena is that they are like illusions. Therefore, the yogi should investigate in this way: the person does not exist separately from form and so forth, because it is not visible, and because the cognition of 'I' arises in relation to form and so forth. The person is also not the nature of the aggregates of form and so forth, because those forms and so forth are impermanent and of a manifold nature, and because others contemplate the person as being of a permanent and singular nature. It is not permissible for there to be an entity of a person that cannot be expressed as being the same or different, because there is no other mode of existence for an entity. Therefore, one should investigate, thinking that one should definitely recognize that the worldly 'I' and 'mine' are false, merely illusions. Then, in order to realize the selflessness of phenomena, one should also consider with regard to corporeal phenomena: do these exist truly and independently from the mind, or is it that the mind itself appears as form and so forth, like appearances in a dream state? By doing so, one analyzes them into subtle particles, and when those subtle particles are also analyzed into parts, they are not found.

If one does not perceive in this way, one can stop the conceptualization of "being" or "non-being." The three realms are also only mind; they are not other than that. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: "Substances are analyzed into atoms; do not conceptualize forms. The nature of mind-only is not understood by those with wrong views." He thinks like this: From beginningless time, due to attachment to unreal forms and so on, just as forms and so on appear in dreams, for children, forms and so on appear as if they are externally cut off. Therefore, the three realms are only mind. Having realized that all phenomena are only mind, he then analyzes it separately, thinking that he is analyzing the nature of all phenomena, and then he analyzes the nature of mind separately. He contemplates in this way: In ultimate truth, mind is also unborn like an illusion. When the false nature holds the appearance of forms and so on, and mind itself appears in various forms, since it is not separate from those forms, how could it be blissful like forms and so on? Just as forms and so on are various forms and are not the nature of one or many, so too, mind is not separate from them, and therefore it is not the nature of one or many. When mind arises, it does not come from anywhere; when it ceases, it does not go anywhere. In ultimate truth, it is not reasonable for it to arise from self, other, or both. Therefore, mind is also like an illusion. Just as mind is, so too all phenomena are like illusions. In ultimate truth, they are unborn, one should contemplate in this way. If that yogi examines what analyzes the mind separately, he will not perceive its nature either. Thus, if the yogi fully examines the nature of whatever object the mind wanders to, he will not perceive its nature either. When he does not perceive it, he examines all things and realizes that they are without essence, like trees by the water, and then he stops the mind from that. Then he conceptualizes about "being" and so on.

Therefore, by being without obstacles, one obtains the yoga that is free from all elaborations and without characteristics. As the noble Jewel Cloud Sutra also stated: In this way, one who is skilled in faults practices emptiness as yoga in order to be free from all elaborations. In this way, by meditating on emptiness many times, if one completely seeks the nature of whatever places the mind wanders to and whatever places the mind particularly delights in, one realizes emptiness. If one examines what the mind is, one also realizes emptiness. If one seeks the nature of the mind that cognizes, one also realizes emptiness. By realizing it in that way, one enters the yoga without characteristics. This is to say that one who does not closely cognize does not enter into the signless. In this way, when closely cognizing the nature of phenomena, when there is nothing to be seen, one does not cognize it as existent. One also does not cognize it as non-existent, because whatever is examined as non-existent does not appear in his mind at any time. If an object is seen, then one should examine it, saying that it is non-existent because it has ceased. When the wisdom of a yogi examines, if an object is not seen in the three times, then how should one discriminate what has ceased, saying that it is non-existent? Because the cognition of objects and the cognition of the non-existence of objects pervade all cognitions, therefore at that time other cognitions do not arise, because if there is no pervader, there is also nothing to be pervaded. If that is the case, then one has entered into the state of non-elaboration and non-conceptualization. One also does not abide in form and so forth. If one examines with wisdom, since the nature of all objects is not seen, one is also a meditator of supreme wisdom. In this way, since one has entered into the suchness of selflessness of persons and phenomena, there is nothing else to be observed and examined, so there is no deliberation and no expression, and one enters into a single state, naturally, by one's own mind, and since there is no manifest activity, the yogi should very clearly ascertain and abide in that suchness. Even when abiding there, one should not let the stream of mind be distracted. When the mind is distracted to external objects in the meantime,
