Stages of Meditation. Stages of Meditation. In Sanskrit: Bhāvanākramaṇa. In Tibetan: Stages of Meditation. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! For those who have entered the Mahāyāna Sūtra tradition, I shall briefly explain the stages of meditation. Although the Blessed One has already taught the immeasurable and countless different samādhis of the Bodhisattvas, since śamatha and vipaśyanā encompass all samādhis, I shall explain the path of engaging in the union of śamatha and vipaśyanā. The Blessed One said: By the vipaśyanā of birth, If one cultivates śamatha, One will be liberated from the bonds of bad states, And the bonds of signs. Therefore, those who wish to abandon all obscurations should cultivate śamatha and vipaśyanā. The power of śamatha, like a lamp in a windless place, will make the mind unmoving from its object. Vipaśyanā, like the sun rising in the darkness, will thoroughly understand the reality of things as they are, and the light of correct wisdom will arise, and all obscurations will be abandoned. Therefore, the Blessed One has taught four objects of focus for yogis: non-conceptual images, conceptual images, the limit of things, and the complete fulfillment of needs. Among these, śamatha focuses on the image of all dharmas and generates faith in the image of the Buddha, etc. This is called a non-conceptual image. Because there is no conceptualization in the true meaning, it is called non-conceptual. Because it focuses on the image of the dharmas as they are heard and grasped, it is called an image. In order for the yogi to realize the true meaning, when vipaśyanā operates on that very image, because the nature of vipaśyanā is to realize that very truth, there is conceptualization of realization, so it is called a conceptual image. The yogi, by realizing the very nature of that image, thus thoroughly understands the nature of all dharmas as they are.
