DTG110 0009.The Stages of Meditation..g2.0f

English

One should strive to accomplish all gatherings of wisdom. If that is done, then that meditation is the actual accomplishment of emptiness endowed with all aspects of excellence. As it is said in the Noble Jewel in the Crown: "He puts on the armor of love and dwells in the realm of great compassion, and meditates on the meditation that actually accomplishes emptiness endowed with all aspects of excellence." What is emptiness endowed with all aspects of excellence? That which is inseparable from generosity, inseparable from ethics, inseparable from patience, inseparable from diligence, inseparable from meditation, inseparable from wisdom, inseparable from skillful means, and so forth, as extensively taught. A Bodhisattva is one who completely ripens all sentient beings, and it is necessary to rely on the virtues of generosity and so forth, which are the means of perfecting fields, bodies, many attendants, and so forth. If that is not the case, then what will be the result of the perfection of the Buddha-fields and so forth that are taught? Therefore, the omniscient wisdom endowed with all aspects of excellence is perfected by the means of generosity and so forth, so the Bhagavan taught that the omniscient wisdom is perfected by means. Therefore, a Bodhisattva should also rely on the means of generosity and so forth, and not just emptiness alone. As it is also taught in the Noble Sutra Compendium of All Dharmas, which is Extremely Extensive: Maitreya, the six perfections that Bodhisattvas accomplish correctly are for the sake of complete enlightenment. Among them, those foolish people say this: Bodhisattvas should only train in the perfection of wisdom, what is the use of the other perfections?

When practicing the application of diligence, would those roots of virtue that have accumulated the six perfections be harmed by those roots of virtue? Maitreya asked: "Bhagavan, it is not so." The Bhagavan said: "Ajita, you have also perfectly accomplished the perfection of generosity for sixty kalpas, the perfection of discipline for sixty kalpas, the perfection of patience for sixty kalpas, the perfection of diligence for sixty kalpas, the perfection of meditation for sixty kalpas, and the perfection of wisdom for sixty kalpas." Those foolish people say that enlightenment is achieved through only one method, such as through the method of emptiness. Their conduct will become completely impure, and so on. If one is without skillful means, a Bodhisattva's wisdom alone cannot accomplish the deeds of a Buddha like a Shravaka. But if it is sustained by skillful means, it can be accomplished. As it is said in the Holy Ratnakuta Sutra: "O Kashyapa, just as kings who are attended by ministers accomplish all that is needed, so too, the wisdom of a Bodhisattva that is fully attended by skillful means accomplishes all the deeds of a Buddha." The view of the path of Bodhisattvas is also different. The view of the path of non-Buddhists and Shravakas is also different. The view of the path of non-Buddhists is a path that is devoid of wisdom in all things because it is associated with inverted views such as self. Therefore, they do not attain liberation. The Shravakas are devoid of great compassion and therefore do not possess skillful means. Therefore, they will be solely devoted to Nirvana. The path of Bodhisattvas is considered to be associated with wisdom and skillful means, and therefore they will be devoted to non-abiding Nirvana. The path of Bodhisattvas is considered to be associated with wisdom and skillful means, and therefore they attain non-abiding Nirvana. By the power of wisdom, they do not fall into Samsara, and by the power of skillful means, they will be in Nirvana.

In order not to fall. Therefore, from the noble Gaya Head Mountain, the path of the Bodhisattvas, in short, is these two. What are the two? They are skillful means and wisdom. The noble "Supreme First" also says: The Perfection of Wisdom is not the mother, skillful means is the father. The noble "Vimalakirti Sutra" also says: What is the bondage of the Bodhisattvas? What is liberation? Without skillful means, clinging to the cycle of existence is the bondage of the Bodhisattva. Entering the cycle of existence with skillful means is liberation. Without wisdom, clinging to the cycle of existence is the bondage of the Bodhisattva. Entering the cycle of existence with wisdom is liberation. Wisdom not grasped by skillful means is bondage. Wisdom grasped by skillful means is liberation. Skillful means not grasped by wisdom is bondage. Skillful means grasped by wisdom is liberation. If a Bodhisattva only cultivates wisdom, he will fall into the Nirvana desired by the Hearers, becoming a bondage, and will not be liberated by non-abiding Nirvana. Therefore, wisdom without skillful means is the bondage of the Bodhisattvas. Therefore, just as one warms oneself with fire to ward off the cold, a Bodhisattva, in order to dispel the excess of perversion, should cultivate emptiness with wisdom accompanied by skillful means, but should not realize it like the Hearers. As it is said in the noble "Ten Dharmas Sutra": Son of good family, for example, someone fully uses fire. He respects and honors that fire, but he does not think: I respect, honor, and depict that fire, so I will grasp it with both hands. Why? Because he thinks that if he does so, my body will suffer, or my mind will feel discomfort. Similarly, a Bodhisattva also has the thought of Nirvana, but he does not realize Nirvana. Why? Because he thinks that if he does so, I may regress from Bodhi.
