It is like saying, "For the sake of what will come." If one relies solely on means, even bodhisattvas cannot transcend the realm of ordinary beings and become extremely bound. Therefore, one should rely on means accompanied by wisdom. For example, just as poison completely controlled by mantras, if bodhisattvas cultivate afflictions with the power of wisdom, they can transform into nectar. What need is there to mention those that naturally manifest noble fruits, such as generosity? As stated in the Holy Jewel Heap Sutra: "Light Protector, for example, poison completely controlled by mantras and medicine cannot cause death. Similarly, the afflictions of bodhisattvas, completely controlled by wisdom, cannot cause them to fall into wrongdoing." Therefore, because bodhisattvas do not abandon samsara through the power of means, they do not fall into nirvana. Because they abandon all objects of focus through the power of wisdom, they do not fall into samsara. Therefore, they also attain non-abiding nirvana, which is Buddhahood itself. Therefore, it is also stated in the Holy Akashagarbha Sutra: "Through the knowledge of wisdom, all afflictions are completely abandoned. Through the knowledge of means, all sentient beings are not completely abandoned." It is also stated in the Holy Samdhinirmocana Sutra: "Not being extremely inclined towards the benefit of sentient beings, and not being extremely inclined towards all fabricated appearances, I have not taught this as unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." Therefore, those who desire to attain Buddhahood should rely on both wisdom and means. Among these, in the stage of cultivating transcendent wisdom, or in the stage of entering deep samadhi, even if reliance on means such as generosity does not occur, when the preparatory stage related to it and the wisdom arising from it occur, reliance on means will inevitably occur. Therefore, wisdom and means are employed simultaneously. Furthermore, the path by which bodhisattvas engage in the union of wisdom and means is as follows: sentient beings
