One should not be distracted. When, in the intermediate state, the mind is distracted outwards by desire and the like, at that time one should be aware of the distraction, and quickly pacify the distraction by meditating on the unattractive and so forth, and then quickly withdraw the mind and settle it in suchness. When one sees that the mind is displeased with suchness, one should cultivate delight in it by seeing the qualities of samadhi. By seeing the faults of distraction, one should also greatly pacify displeasure. If dullness and sleep oppress, and one sees that the mind is sinking or suspects that it is sinking because the mode of activity is unclear, then, as before, one should quickly pacify the sinking by attending to an object of great delight, and again grasp that very object very firmly. If, when one remembers past experiences and play, one sees that the mind is fluttering or suspects that it is agitated in the intermediate state, then, as before, one should pacify the agitation by attending to objects that will cause aversion, such as impermanence, and then again strive to settle the mind in suchness without any effort. If, when one is free from sinking and agitation and has entered into equipoise, the mind naturally settles in suchness, then one should relax effort and remain in equanimity. If one makes an effort with a mind that has entered into equipoise, then the mind will become distracted. If one does not make an effort with a mind that has become sunk, then one will lack superior seeing because of excessive sinking, and the mind will become like a blind person. Therefore, if the mind becomes sunk, one should make an effort. If one is in equipoise, one should not make an effort. When, by cultivating superior seeing, wisdom becomes very strong, then, because calm abiding is weak, the mind will waver like a lamp placed in the wind, and therefore one will not be able to see suchness very clearly. Therefore, at that time one should cultivate calm abiding. If calm abiding becomes strong, one should also cultivate superior seeing. When the two are practiced simultaneously, one should remain without effort until the body and mind are harmed. If the body and so forth are harmed, then at that time one should

One should view all conditioned phenomena as illusions, mirages, dreams, reflections of the moon in water, and optical illusions, and think thus: These beings, not having understood such profound Dharma, are constantly tormented in samsara. I must, by all means, make them understand this nature of reality. Thinking thus, one should manifest great compassion and the mind of enlightenment. Then, rest. Again, similarly, one should enter into the samadhi of non-appearance of all dharmas. If the mind becomes very weary, one should rest in the same way. This is the path of uniting calm abiding and insight, focusing on images with and without conceptualization. Thus, the yogi should meditate and remain in this way, according to this sequence, for one hour, half a session, one session, or as long as desired. This is the samadhi of thoroughly distinguishing the meaning, taught in the "Lankavatara Sutra." Then, if desired, one can rise from samadhi without breaking the lotus position, thinking thus: Even though all these dharmas are indeed without inherent existence in the ultimate sense, they are indeed established in the conventional sense. If it were not so, how could the connection between actions and results, and so forth, be established? The Bhagavan also taught: "Things arise conventionally, but in the ultimate sense, they have no self-nature." These beings with childish minds, due to clinging to existence and non-existence, and so forth, in things that are without inherent existence, have their minds turned upside down, and wander completely in the wheel of samsara for a long time. I must, by all means, perfect the unsurpassed accumulation of merit and wisdom, and then attain the state of omniscience, and make them understand this nature of reality. After thinking thus, one should slowly break the lotus position, prostrate to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the ten directions, make offerings and praises to them, and then make vast aspirations, such as the "Noble Conduct of Samantabhadra." Then, with emptiness and great compassion as the essence, perform generosity and other meritorious and
