The Stages of Meditation. The Stages of Meditation. In Sanskrit: Bhāvanākrama. In Tibetan: The Stages of Meditation. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī. For those who follow the Great Vehicle, the tradition of the Sutras, the stages of meditation will be briefly explained. Here, those who desire to quickly attain omniscience, endowed with realization, should diligently strive for the causes and conditions that bring about its attainment. Thus, this omniscience cannot arise without a cause, for everything would then always become omniscient. If it arose without dependence, it should not be obstructed anywhere, for why would everything not transform into omniscience? Therefore, only one in a hundred arises, and all things are solely dependent on causes. Even omniscience only transforms into one in a hundred, not at all times, not in all places, nor everything, therefore it is definitely dependent on causes and conditions. Among those causes and conditions, one should rely on those that are without error and without omission. If one diligently strives for a mistaken cause, one will not obtain the desired result even after a very long time. For example, milking milk from a horn. If one does not practice all the causes, the result will not arise, for if there is no seed or anything else, the result of sprouts and so on will not arise. Therefore, those who desire that result should rely on causes and conditions that are without error and complete. What are those causes and conditions for the result of omniscience? It is said: Like me, who is like a blind person, although I cannot rely on them, nevertheless, after the Blessed One himself attained perfect enlightenment, as he spoke to the beings to be tamed, so I also speak as the Blessed One spoke himself. The Blessed One declared there: Lord of Secrets, the wisdom of omniscience arises from the root of compassion. It arises from the cause of bodhicitta. It is perfected by means. Thus it is said. Therefore, omniscience

Now, in order to attain, one should train in these three: compassion, the mind of enlightenment, and skillful means. If moved by compassion, Bodhisattvas will surely vow to liberate all sentient beings. Then, eliminating the view of self, one respectfully enters the accumulations of merit and wisdom, which are extremely difficult to perform, continuous, and accumulated over a long period. Having entered, one will surely accomplish the complete accumulation of merit and wisdom. If the accumulations are complete, it will be as if one has obtained omniscience. Therefore, the root of omniscience is only compassion, so one should become accustomed to it from the very beginning. It is also taught in the Sutra of the Collection of the True Dharma: "Bhagavan, Bodhisattvas should not train in too many dharmas. Bhagavan, if a Bodhisattva grasps and understands one dharma, then all the Buddha's dharmas will be in the palm of their hand." What is this one dharma? It is great compassion. Because they are completely seized by great compassion, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, although they have attained all their own perfect benefits, still remain until the realm of sentient beings is exhausted. They do not enter the city of Nirvana, which is extremely peaceful, like the Shravakas. Because they see sentient beings, they abandon the peaceful city of Nirvana as if it were a burning iron house, so the cause of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, not abiding in Nirvana is this great compassion. Therefore, from the beginning of entering, one should explain the order of cultivating compassion. First, one should temporarily cultivate equanimity, eliminating attachment and anger towards all sentient beings, and thereby accomplish a mind of equanimity. All sentient beings desire happiness and do not desire suffering. In beginningless samsara, there is no sentient being who has not been my relative hundreds of times, thinking in this way completely. If there is any distinction between them, attachment arises towards some, and anger arises towards others, therefore I should have equanimity towards all sentient beings.

One should contemplate in this way, starting from the middle, and cultivate equanimity towards friends and enemies alike. Then, cultivate equanimity towards all sentient beings, and then cultivate loving-kindness. Moisten the stream of consciousness with the water of loving-kindness, prepare it like a field ready for gold, and if you plant the seed of compassion, it will easily and quickly flourish. Then, having subdued the mind-stream with loving-kindness, one should cultivate compassion. This compassion is the aspect of wishing all suffering sentient beings to be free from suffering. All sentient beings in the three realms are afflicted by suffering, each experiencing intense suffering in three different ways, so one should cultivate this compassion for all sentient beings. Thus, first consider the sentient beings in the hells, who are constantly and continuously immersed in a torrent of various sufferings such as heat, as the Blessed One has said. Similarly, the pretas mostly suffer from unbearable hunger and thirst, their bodies parched and their minds exhausted, experiencing much suffering, as the Buddha has said. Animals also devour each other, and the suffering of anger, killing, and harming is clearly visible. Humans are also impoverished by the pursuit of desires, fighting and harming each other, being separated from loved ones, encountering the unloved, and experiencing immeasurable suffering arising from poverty. Those who are entangled in various afflictions such as attachment, whose minds are afflicted by various things, and those who hold various kinds of wrong views, all of them are the cause of suffering, and like standing on the edge of a cliff, there is only suffering. The gods are also all afflicted by the suffering of change. The gods who indulge in desire are constantly harmed in their minds by the misery of the fear of death, falling, and so on, so how can they be happy? The very nature of the suffering of conditioning is the cause of karma and affliction.
