According to the ritual described in the Vinaya section, one who abides in the Bodhisattva vows should generate the mind from a learned spiritual friend. Having thus generated the conventional Bodhicitta, one should strive to generate the ultimate Bodhicitta. That ultimate Bodhicitta is transcendent of the world, free from all elaborations, extremely clear, the object of ultimate reality, immaculate, unwavering, like the flame of a lamp in the absence of wind. Its accomplishment comes from constantly revering and long-term familiarization with the yoga of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. As it is said in the Holy Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra: Maitreya, all the virtuous dharmas of the Śrāvakas, Bodhisattvas, or Tathāgatas, both worldly and transworldly, should be understood as the fruit of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. Thus it is said. Because these two encompass all Samādhis, all yogis should at all times definitely cultivate Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. As it is said in the Holy Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra itself, the Blessed One said: All the various Samādhis that I have taught of the Śrāvakas, Bodhisattvas, and Tathāgatas should be understood as being encompassed by Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. Thus it is said. By merely cultivating Śamatha alone, yogis do not abandon the obscurations. It only temporarily suppresses the afflictions. Because the light of wisdom has not arisen, the latent tendencies cannot be completely destroyed, and therefore the latent tendencies will not be completely destroyed. Therefore, in the Holy Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra itself, it is said: Samatha subdues the afflictions, while wisdom completely destroys the latent tendencies. Thus it was declared. Also, in the Holy Samādhirāja Sūtra: Although that Samādhi is cultivated, it does not always destroy conceptual thought. It is a field for afflictions, extremely disturbed. This superior practice is like cultivating Samādhi. If one individually understands selflessness in the dharmas, if one individually examines that, if one cultivates it, that

Thinking of cessation is the cause for attaining the fruit. Other causes cannot bring about peace. Thus it is said. Also, in the Bodhisattva Pitaka, it is said: Those who have not heard the categories of teachings of the Bodhisattva Pitaka, who have not heard the Vinaya of the Noble Ones, and who are content with mere samadhi, fall into arrogance due to pride. They are not liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and turmoil. They are not liberated from the cycle of the six realms. They are not liberated from the aggregates of suffering. Considering this, the Tathagata said: Hearing what accords with others will lead to liberation from old age and death. Thus it is said. Therefore, wishing to abandon all obscurations and generate completely pure wisdom, one should abide in tranquility and cultivate insight. Thus it is said. In the Noble Jewel Heap Sutra, it is also said: Abiding in morality, one attains samadhi. Having attained samadhi, one cultivates wisdom. Through wisdom, one obtains completely pure wisdom. Through completely pure wisdom, morality is perfectly fulfilled. Thus it is said. In the Sutra on Cultivating Faith in the Great Vehicle, it is also said: Son of good family, if one does not draw near to wisdom, I do not say how Bodhisattvas can have faith in the Great Vehicle, or how I can have faith in the Great Vehicle. Son of good family, in this way, whatever faith Bodhisattvas have in the Great Vehicle, all of that should be known to arise from a non-distracted mind, properly contemplating the meaning and the Dharma. Thus it is said. Insight alone, without tranquility, will cause the yogi's mind to be distracted by objects, and it will not remain stable like a lamp in the wind. Therefore, the light of wisdom will not appear very clearly. Therefore, one should rely on both equally. Therefore, in the Noble Great Nirvana Sutra, it is also said: The Shravakas do not see the lineage of the Tathagata.

Because the component of concentration is large and wisdom is small. Bodhisattvas can see, but it is not clear, because the component of wisdom is large and concentration is small. The Tathagata sees everything, because he possesses equal quiescence and insight. Thus it was said. By the power of quiescence, just as a candle is not moved by the wind, the winds of discursive thoughts cannot shake the mind. By the power of insight, all the stains of evil views are abandoned, so others cannot destroy it. As it is said in the "Moon Lamp Sutra": By the power of quiescence, it becomes unmoving. By insight, it becomes like a mountain. It is like that which was said. Therefore, one should abide having practiced yoga in both. First, how can a yogi quickly and easily accomplish quiescence and insight? One should rely on the conducive conditions for quiescence and insight. What are the conducive conditions for quiescence? Dwelling in a suitable place, having few desires, being content, completely abandoning many activities, having pure morality, and completely abandoning desires and other discursive thoughts. Among these, one should know that a place with five qualities is a suitable place: because it is easy to obtain clothes and food, it is easy to obtain; because unruly people and enemies do not dwell there, the dwelling is good; because it is a land without disease, the land is good; because friends are those who possess morality and have the same view, the friends are good; because it is not filled with many people during the day and the sound is small at night, it is well-endowed. What is having few desires? Not being particularly attached to good or many Dharma robes, etc. What is contentment? Always being content with obtaining a small amount of coarse Dharma robes, etc. What is completely abandoning many activities? Completely abandoning evil deeds such as fishmongering, and completely abandoning excessive conversation between householders and renunciates, and completely abandoning practicing medicine, astrology, etc. What is pure morality? For both sets of vows, both naturally sinful and
