One should not violate the precepts, including the subtle ones, and even if one violates them due to carelessness, one should quickly act according to the Dharma with repentance. Regarding the defeats in the Hearer's vows that are said to be irreparable, one should also have repentance, have the mind not to do it again in the future, and because one separately examines with what mind one did that action, that mind is without inherent existence, or because one is accustomed to all phenomena being without inherent existence, one should say that his discipline is completely pure. This should be understood from the removal of the repentance of the noble Ajatashatru. Therefore, one should make it without regret and diligently strive in meditation. Regarding desires, one should also think that there will be many faults in this life and the next, and abandon the discriminations about them. On the other hand, whether the objects of samsara are pleasant or unpleasant, all of them are of the nature of destruction, are unstable, and without a doubt, I and all those things will soon be separated, so what will I be attached to, etc.? By meditating in this way, all discriminations should be abandoned. What are the conditions for insight? Relying on a noble person, seeking much learning, and proper attention. Among them, what kind of noble person should one rely on? One who has much learning, clear speech, compassion, and can endure fatigue. Among them, what is seeking much learning? It is respectfully listening to the twelve divisions of the Buddha's teachings, including the definitive and provisional meanings, as it is said in the "Noble Explanation of the Profound Meaning Sutra": "Not hearing the words of the noble ones as desired is an obstacle to insight." In the same sutra, it is also said: "Insight arises from hearing and thinking, and is the cause of pure views." The "Sutra Requested by the Noble Akshayamati" also says: "One who has hearing, wisdom will arise. One who has wisdom, afflictions will be completely pacified." What is proper attention? It is good to pay attention to the sutras of definitive meaning and the sutras of provisional meaning, etc.

Establishing the Place: If a Bodhisattva is without doubt, then they will definitely be able to concentrate on meditation. If not, then like clinging to a rope of doubt, or like a person walking to the edge of a cliff, they will not be able to concentrate on anything. The yogi should at all times abstain from fish, meat, and other unsuitable things, and should eat in moderation. Thus, the Bodhisattva, having accumulated all the collections of Shamatha and Vipassana, should enter into meditation. Among them, when the yogi meditates, they should first complete all the tasks that need to be done, and after urinating and defecating, in a pleasant place free from noise, think, "I shall establish all sentient beings in the essence of enlightenment," with the thought of taming all beings, manifest great compassion, and prostrate with the five limbs to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas residing in the ten directions. Place the body image, painting, etc. of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in front, or elsewhere, and offer praises and praises to them as much as possible, confessing their own sins, and rejoicing in the merits of all beings. On a very soft and comfortable cushion, like the lotus posture of the Blessed One Vairochana, or half-lotus posture, the eyes should not be opened too much, nor closed too much, but focused on the tip of the nose. The body should not be bent too much, nor straightened too much, but straightened upright, and mindfulness should be placed inward and abide. Then, keep the shoulders level, the head neither high nor low, and not tilted to one side, keep the nose and navel straight. The teeth and lips should also be placed as usual. The tongue should also be placed against the upper teeth. The breath going in and out should not be noisy, heavy, or rapid. Be sure to breathe in and out slowly and naturally without being aware of it. Among them, one should first practice Shamatha for a while, and for the distraction of external objects, one should always abide in the object of Shamatha within, and should be endowed with joy and pliancy.

Remaining in one's own mind is called tranquility (śamatha). When focusing on that very tranquility, whatever discriminative observation is made on that alone is insight (vipaśyanā). As it is said in the Noble Jewel Cloud Sutra: 'Tranquility is the one-pointedness of mind. Insight is the correct and distinct observation.' Similarly, in the Noble Saṃdhinirmocana Sutra, it is said: 'Bhagavan, how does one seek tranquility, and how is one skilled in insight?' The Buddha replied to Maitreya: 'Maitreya, the Dharma teachings I have established are as follows: the sūtra section, the geya section, the vyākaraṇa section, the gāthā section, the udāna section, the nidāna section, the avadāna section, the itivṛttaka section, the jātaka section, the vaipulya section, the adbhutadharma section, and the upadeśa section. These are explained to bodhisattvas, and bodhisattvas listen well, hold them well, become proficient in recitation, examine them well with their minds, and thoroughly understand them with their views. Then, dwelling alone in a secluded place, they properly apply their minds inwardly, and with whatever mind they apply their minds, they continuously apply their minds inwardly. Having entered into this and remained in it many times, whatever arises as the extreme pliancy of body and the extreme pliancy of mind is called tranquility. Thus, bodhisattvas seek tranquility. Having attained that extreme pliancy of body and extreme pliancy of mind, they abide in that very state, abandoning mental distractions, and they distinctly observe and admire the objects of meditation in the images of the realm of samādhi. Thus, in those images of the realm of samādhi, whatever is the discrimination, detailed discrimination, complete understanding, complete observation, forbearance, desire, differentiation, view, and thought of the meaning of what is to be known is called insight. Thus, bodhisattvas are skilled in insight.' So it was said.
