Therefore, if a yogi wishes to accomplish calm abiding, he should first briefly gather all the scriptures, such as the Sutra Pitaka and the Section of Songs, into that which inclines towards suchness, that which falls into suchness, and that which enters into suchness, and settle his mind on this. On the other hand, one should settle one's mind on the aggregates and so forth, which encompass all phenomena in whatever way. On the other hand, one should settle one's mind on the form of the Buddha's body as seen and heard. As it is said in the Holy Samadhiraja Sutra: "With a body like the color of gold, the protector of the world is beautiful everywhere; whoever focuses his mind on that, that bodhisattva is called equanimity." So it is. Thus, having settled the mind on the object of desire, one should constantly gather the mind back to that object and abide in it. Having settled on that, one should examine the mind in this way: Is the object well held? Or is it sinking? Or is it distracted by scattering to external objects? One should observe in this way. If the mind sinks under the influence of drowsiness and sleep, or if one sees the danger of sinking, one should remember objects of great joy, such as the form of the Buddha's body, or remember the idea of light. After that, one should pacify the sinking, and in any case, the mind should be made to see the object very clearly. When the mind does not see the object very clearly, like a blind man, like a man entering a dark room, or like closing the eyes, one should know that one has fallen into sinking. When, because of running after the qualities of external forms and so forth, or because of thinking of other things, or because of desire for previously experienced objects, the mind becomes agitated or sees the danger of agitation, one should remember all conditioned things as impermanent, painful, and other things that cause aversion. After that, one should pacify the distraction, and with the rope of mindfulness and awareness, one should attach the elephant of the mind to the trunk of that object. When there is no sinking or agitation, the object

When one sees the mind resting peacefully in that state, one should relax effort and remain equanimous. At that time, one should remain as long as desired. Having thus become accustomed to calm abiding, when the mind has become extremely pliant with the body, and when the mind becomes independent on the object as desired, one should recognize that calm abiding has been accomplished at that time. Then, after accomplishing calm abiding, one should cultivate insight, thinking thus: All the teachings of the Bhagavan are well-spoken, making that very reality clearly manifest either through direct perception or through transmission, and being devoted to that very reality itself. If one knows that very reality, just as the appearance of light dispels darkness, one will become free from all nets of views. By mere calm abiding, wisdom will not become pure, nor will it dispel the darkness of obscuration. But if one cultivates that very reality well through wisdom, wisdom will become completely pure. Only through wisdom will one realize that very reality. Only through wisdom will one completely abandon obscurations. Therefore, I should abide in calm abiding and completely seek that very reality through wisdom, and should not be content with mere calm abiding. One should think thus. What is that very reality? It is that in ultimate truth, all things are emptiness, devoid of self of persons and self of phenomena. And this can only be realized through the Perfection of Wisdom, and not by other means. As it is said in the Noble *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "Bhagavan, with what Perfection of Wisdom does the Bodhisattva hold the non-essential nature of phenomena?" "Avalokiteśvara holds it with the Perfection of Wisdom." Thus it is said. Therefore, one should abide in calm abiding and cultivate wisdom. In this regard, the yogi should practice in this way: a person is not found apart from the aggregates, elements, and sense bases. A person is also not the nature of the aggregates and so forth, because those aggregates and so forth are of the nature of impermanence and multiplicity. And others have conceived that a person is of the nature of permanence and oneness. It is impossible for there to be a real entity of a person that cannot be spoken of as being the same as or different from them, because a real entity
