It is taught in the Abhidhamma and so on. In order to avoid superimposition and defamation on things, it is counted by means of summarizing into aggregates and realms, etc. Then, after distinguishing the categories of all things, one should repeatedly and continuously apply the mind to it. When desire and so on occasionally cause the mind to be distracted outward, one should be aware of the distraction, pacify the distraction by meditating on the unattractive and so on, and quickly draw the mind back to the object again and again. The order of meditating on the unattractive and so on is omitted here for fear of too many words. When one sees something unpleasant, one should contemplate the qualities of samadhi, cultivate joy in it, and thoroughly pacify the unpleasantness by contemplating the faults of distraction. If one is oppressed by dullness and sleep, and the grasping of the object is unclear and the mind becomes dull, one should meditate on the perception of light, or eliminate the dullness by thinking of the qualities of supremely pleasing objects such as the Buddha, and hold that object firmly. If one remembers laughing and playing, etc., and sees the mind becoming agitated from time to time, one should pacify the agitation by thinking of impermanence and other things that cause aversion. Then, one should again strive to let the mind dwell on that object without any effort. When one is free from both sinking and agitation, dwells equally, and sees the mind arising naturally, one should abandon effort and remain neutral. If one makes effort to dwell equally, the mind will become distracted. When the mind dwells on that object without any effort, for as long as one wishes to dwell, one should know that shamatha is complete. Because the nature of shamatha is merely one-pointedness of mind, this is the common characteristic of all shamathas. Its object is not fixed. This path of shamatha is also explained in the Prajnaparamita and other scriptures. It was said: 'Fix the mind on this and that. Fix it constantly. Fix it repeatedly. Fix it closely.'

Subduing, pacifying, extremely pacifying, one-pointed, and equanimously abiding, thus nine terms are spoken. Among them, 'abiding' means attaching the mind to the object of focus. 'Constantly abiding' means constantly abiding in that very object of focus. 'Having taken, abiding' means knowing distraction and abandoning it. 'Closely abiding' means having abandoned distraction, diligently abiding again and again in that very object of focus. 'Subduing' means generating joy. 'Pacifying' means seeing the faults of distraction, not being pleased, and extremely pacifying. 'Extremely pacifying' means eliminating the arising of dullness and sleep, etc. 'One-pointed' means striving to enter without manifest effort. 'Equanimously abiding' means acting with equanimity when the mind has become equal, it is a synonym for equanimously holding. The meaning of these terms is what was said by the noble Maitreya and the former abbots. In short, all samadhis have six faults: laziness, forgetting the object of focus, sinking, excitement, non-application of effort, and application of effort. To counteract them, one cultivates eight efforts of abandonment, namely: faith, desire, diligence, pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity. Among them, the first four are the antidote to laziness; thus, faith, which has the characteristic of manifest trust in the qualities of samadhi, generates desire in the yogis for it. Then, from desire, diligence is initiated. By the power of that diligence, the body and mind are made capable. Then, when the body and mind have become extremely pliant, laziness recedes, therefore, cultivating faith, etc., is for the sake of abandoning laziness. Mindfulness is the antidote to forgetting the object of focus. Awareness is the antidote to sinking and excitement, therefore, it truly knows sinking and excitement. When sinking and excitement have not been completely pacified, non-application of effort is a fault; to counteract it, one cultivates attention. Sinking and excitement are completely pacified, when the mind is in a state of

At that time, effort is wrong. To counteract it, at that time, cultivate equanimity. If one possesses these eight acts of abandonment, then samadhi will be very firm, and it will accomplish qualities such as magical powers. Therefore, it is said in the Sutra Pitaka that one should cultivate the feet of magical power that possess the eight acts of abandonment. This one-pointedness of mind, possessing fitness more and more, and having obtained the distinctions of qualities such as the object of focus, obtains the names of dhyana, formless absorption, liberation, and so on. Thus, when one possesses the feeling of equanimity and is accompanied by investigation and analysis, it is called non-regression, which is the mind of the practice of the first dhyana. When one is separated from the desire for desire and sinful dharmas, and is endowed with investigation, analysis, joy, and happiness, it is called the first dhyana. From that very first dhyana, only the absence of investigation is called the special dhyana. When one is separated from investigation and analysis, and is separated from the desire of the ground of the first dhyana, and is endowed with joy, happiness, and inner purity and self-confidence, it is called the second dhyana. When one is separated from the desire of the ground of the second dhyana, and is endowed with happiness, equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness, it is called the third dhyana. When one is separated from the desire of the ground of the third dhyana, and is neither suffering nor happiness, and is endowed with equanimity and mindfulness, it is called the fourth dhyana. Similarly, formless absorption, liberation, and the spheres of dominance, etc., should also be combined with the distinctions of object and aspect, etc. Thus, having stabilized the mind on that object, one should analyze it with wisdom. In this way, because the light of knowledge arises, the seeds of universal delusion will be completely abandoned. If it is not like that, like the non-Buddhists, one will not be able to abandon afflictions by mere samadhi. As it is said in the Sutra Pitaka
