Stages of Meditation. Stages of Meditation. In Sanskrit: Bhāvanākrama. In Tibetan: Stages of Meditation. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! From the conduct of the Great Vehicle's sutras, the first of practices, from that, having begun, the stages of meditation, I shall briefly explain. Those who wish to quickly attain omniscience should, in short, strive in these three: compassion, the mind of enlightenment, and diligence, and place. Among these, having understood that compassion alone is the root of the cause of all the Buddha's teachings, one should meditate on it alone as the very first. As it is said in the Noble Excellent Law, then the Noble Avalokiteśvara said this to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, Bodhisattvas should not study too many doctrines. Bhagavan, if Bodhisattvas grasp and understand one doctrine, then all the Buddha's doctrines are in their palm. What is that one doctrine? It is great compassion. Bhagavan, great compassion makes all the Buddha's doctrines be in the palm of Bodhisattvas. Bhagavan, for example, wherever the precious wheel of a universal monarch is, there all the hosts of armies are. Bhagavan, similarly, wherever the great compassion of a Bodhisattva is, there all the Buddha's doctrines are. Bhagavan, for example, if the life force exists, other faculties will arise. Bhagavan, similarly, if great compassion exists, other doctrines of Bodhisattvas will also arise." Thus it is said. It is also said in the Noble Teaching of Inexhaustible Intelligence: "Venerable Śāradvatīputra, the great compassion of Bodhisattvas is inexhaustible. Why is that? Because it goes before. Venerable Śāradvatīputra, for example, the breath that goes in and out is the life force of a person that goes before. Similarly, the great compassion of a Bodhisattva goes before for the sake of perfectly accomplishing the Great Vehicle."

And others are extensively explained. It is also stated in the "Noble Goya Mountain Sutra": "Manjushri, what is the beginning of the conduct of Bodhisattvas? What is the place?" Manjushri replied: "Son of the gods, the beginning of the conduct of Bodhisattvas is great compassion, and the place is sentient beings." And so on, which extensively describes these. Therefore, driven by great compassion, Bodhisattvas do not look to themselves but wholeheartedly seek the benefit of others, so accumulating merit is very difficult and involves a long time and fatigue. It is like what is said in the "Noble Sutra on Generating the Power of Faith," where great compassion means that for the sake of fully maturing all sentient beings, there is no suffering that is not accepted, and no happiness that is not abandoned. Thus, having entered into extremely difficult undertakings, one will complete the accumulation of merit without delay and undoubtedly attain the state of omniscience. Therefore, the root of all the Buddha's teachings is only great compassion. Because of being completely seized by great compassion, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, attained the state of omniscient wisdom, benefiting all beings and abiding. Like non-abiding Nirvana, it is also due to the great compassion of the Bhagavan that he does not abide in Nirvana. This also arises from focusing on suffering sentient beings and making much mental effort. One should contemplate all sentient beings in this way: sentient beings in the three realms, all their actions are in accordance with the three kinds of suffering, so they are suffering. Among them, the Bhagavan said: 'Those hell beings are constantly and for a long time immersed in the river of various sufferings such as heat.' Similarly, ghosts mostly suffer from unbearable hunger and thirst, their bodies are scorched by fire, and they experience great suffering, and even for a hundred years, some cannot find even pus and blood ash and impure things to eat.' The Bhagavan said so. Animals also eat each other, are angry, and harm each other.
