If it is admitted that appearances are false, then consciousness also becomes untrue, because consciousness is not different from its own nature. If there is no nature of consciousness apart from the nature of realizing self, and if forms and so on are also manifested by self, then those that have become the self-nature of consciousness are false, so it is admitted that all consciousness is also false. The Blessed One also said that consciousness is like an illusion. Therefore, it is certain that all these things are not truly true in the ultimate sense, since they are empty of the nature of one and many. To explain this meaning, the Blessed One also said in the Noble Lankavatara Sutra: 'Just as forms in a mirror, neither one nor different, appear but do not exist, so are the natures of things.' This is the meaning of being separated from oneness and multiplicity. Again, it is said: 'If examined by the mind, self-nature is not graspable, therefore it is said that they are inexpressible, and self-nature is also said to be non-existent.' In this way, the wisdom of thought distinguishes the true meaning, and in order to realize it, the wisdom of meditation is generated. It is taught in the Noble Cloud of Jewels and so on that meaning cannot be realized merely by hearing and so on. Practitioners also have faults, namely, that even though the appearances of knowledge are very clear, they do not dispel the darkness that truly obscures. Even if one meditates many times, knowledge will become very clear even for non-true meanings. For example, what need is there to say about the true meaning, if the knowledge of those who enter into samadhi on impure and decaying cemeteries and so on arises? Therefore, the fruit of meditation is completely clear knowledge, so the Blessed One said in the King of Samadhi Sutra that this is a meaning with fruit: 'You should understand it, believe in it. The more people contemplate it, the more the discrimination that abides in it, now will focus the mind on it in that way.' And so on, the sutra speaks extensively. Therefore, merely the present

In order to become the cause of tranquility, one must diligently practice meditation. For this reason, a yogi, in order to make the mind abide, should first practice calm abiding. Because the mind is as unsteady as water, it cannot abide without the foundation of calm abiding. A mind that is not in meditative equipoise cannot know reality as it is. The Blessed One also taught that through meditative equipoise one can know reality as it is. The method for attaining calm abiding is to not crave gain and so forth, to abide well in discipline, to willingly endure suffering and so forth, and to exert effort. In this way, one can quickly achieve it. Therefore, the 'Noble Explanation of the Thought' and other scriptures also explain that generosity and so forth are the cause of higher and higher states. Thus, abiding in the accumulations of calm abiding such as discipline, in a pleasant place, make prostrations and so forth to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, confess sins, and rejoice in merit. With only great compassion as the manifest intention, generate the thought of liberating all beings, straighten the body, sit on a comfortable seat, sit in the lotus position, and manifestly accomplish samadhi. First, briefly, one should place the mind on the object that encompasses all things to be analyzed in various ways. The encompassed objects are of two kinds: form and formless. In order to eliminate the fault of distraction for beginners, one should temporarily take the encompassed object as the object of focus. When the attention becomes stable, one can also focus in detail on the distinctions of aggregates, elements, and so forth. As it is taught in the 'Explanation of the Thought' and other scriptures, yogis have various aspects of focus, such as focusing on the eighteen aspects of emptiness. Therefore, in order to benefit all sentient beings, the Blessed One, through distinctions such as form and formless, and through brief, intermediate, and extensive means, elaborately distinguishes things, which is the Dharma.
