Therefore, one should first cultivate the wisdom arising from hearing, which will temporarily grasp the meaning of the scriptures in its entirety. Then, the wisdom arising from contemplation will distinguish between definitive and provisional meanings. After that, relying on the meaning that distinguishes particulars, one should meditate only on the true meaning, and not on what is untrue. If it is determined to be untrue, then due to meditating perversely and not eliminating doubts, true knowledge will not arise. Therefore, meditation will become meaningless, like the meditation of the tirthikas. The Bhagavan also said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "If one discerns selflessness separately in the Dharma, if one examines it separately, if one meditates on that, that itself is the cause of obtaining the fruit of Nirvana. What other cause is there that will not become peaceful?" Therefore, one should contemplate with the wisdom of thought, examining with reason and scripture, and meditate on the very nature of the object that is only true. The very nature of the true object is, in the ultimate sense, only unborn, which is determined by reason and scripture. Regarding scripture, as it is said in the Arya Dharma Samgraha Sutra: "The unborn is true, other dharmas such as birth are untrue." This is like what is said. This is also because it is in accordance with the ultimate truth, so it is said that the unborn is true. But in the ultimate sense, it is neither birth nor non-birth, because it transcends all expressions. Again, it is said in that same sutra: "Son of good family, those who abide in the world are manifestly attached to destruction and arising. Therefore, the Tathagata, endowed with great compassion, speaks of birth and cessation by the power of convention in order to eliminate the place of fear for the world. But for this, no dharma is born." It is also said in the Arya Buddha Dharma Samgraha Sutra: "What is proper attention? What is proper?" The answer is: "The unborn is proper, asking about it is proper attention." Again, it is said in that same sutra: "All dharmas are the gate of 'tsa', free from death, transmigration, and birth. All dharmas are the gate of essence, essence."

Therefore, it is said that it is because of emptiness. Also, in the Holy Two Truths Distinguishing Scripture, it is said: Without arising, with equality, all dharmas are equal. Also, in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, it is said: Subhuti, form is empty by the nature of form. Even consciousness is empty by the nature of consciousness, because of the emptiness of its own characteristic. Also, in the Elephant's Strength Scripture, it is said: Whatever has the possibility of arising, no thing is found, but children desire the arising of things that do not arise. Thus it is said. Also, in the Scripture of the Meeting of Father and Son, it is said: All these dharmas are equal in the three times by equality, in the past time all dharmas are without self-nature, so even until the present time they are without self-nature. Thus it is declared, so for the time being, let us examine it with scripture. If we examine it with reason, we cannot lead the meaning of the scripture elsewhere, so we should examine it separately with reason. Therein, when reason is to be expressed, does the arising of things arise from a causeless source, or does it arise from a cause? Because it appears to be sometimes and sometimes not, it does not arise from a causeless source. Because it does not depend on a cause, there is no difference, why do all things not always arise as at the time of birth? Because there is no difference from the time when things do not exist, it should not arise even at the time of birth. Thus, for the time being, it is not permissible to arise from a causeless source. Nor does it arise from a cause. Just as the non-Buddhists say, even if the permanent such as Ishvara is taken as the cause, things will not arise from that, because it appears to arise gradually. A fruit without a complete cause should not change gradually, because it has no dependence. Ishvara and others have power in themselves, so they do not depend on others, because they are permanent, so they do not need others to help them. One should not depend on those who do not help. Therefore, Ishvara and others are empty of all abilities, so like the son of a barren woman, they have no self-nature.
