Merely abandoning (afflictions) is not considered true abandonment. If doubt is not abandoned, one cannot completely abandon the mental engagement of clinging to previously perceived forms, etc., just as one cannot abandon heat without abandoning fire. Like these conceptualizations of forms, etc., like thorns, etc., they cannot be pulled out and removed from the mind by hand, because the seed of doubt must be abandoned. And that seed of doubt, after the appearance of the yogi's samatha-vipassana, when examined with the eye of wisdom, those previously perceived forms, etc., which have become the nature of being able to be perceived, are abandoned because they are not perceived, just as one mistakes a rope for a snake. Otherwise, it is not so. At that time, because one is free from the seed of doubt, one can abandon the mental engagement with the characteristics of forms, etc.; otherwise, it is not so. If it is not so, if the appearance of samatha-vipassana has not arisen, if one has not looked with the eye of wisdom, like a person sitting in a dark cave, like pots, etc., existing in a house being devoured by doubt, the yogi will also doubt whether forms, etc., exist, and cannot reverse it. If that does not reverse, like not having removed the fault of cataracts, forms, etc., are not true, and clinging will arise, which cannot be prevented in any way. Therefore, one must seize the mind with the hand of samatha-vipassana, and with the extremely subtle sword of wisdom, remove the thorn of the seed of inverted conceptualization of forms, etc., that exists in that mind. If this is done, just as trees that have grown from the root do not grow from the soil, because there is no root, the mind of inverted conceptualization will also not arise. Therefore, in order to abandon obscurations, the Bhagavan taught the path of uniting samatha and vipassana, because these two are the cause of true, non-conceptual wisdom. It is said: By abiding in discipline, one obtains samadhi; having obtained samadhi, one should also cultivate wisdom; with wisdom, one obtains completely pure wisdom; with completely pure wisdom, discipline is perfected. Thus it was taught. Thus, when samatha makes the mind stable on the object, then with wisdom

If one examines well, the appearance of correct wisdom will arise. At that time, just as darkness is dispelled by the appearance of light, obscurations will also arise. These two, like the eye and appearance, exist in harmony to produce correct wisdom, and are not discordant like appearance and darkness. Samadhi is the nature of darkness. Why? Because it is the characteristic of the mind being focused on one point. If one abides in samadhi, one will thoroughly understand things as they are, so it is very harmonious with wisdom, and not discordant. Therefore, if one examines with the wisdom of abiding in samadhi, then all dharmas are unobtainable, and that is the supreme unobtainable. The state of quiescence for yogis is naturally accomplished in this way, because there is nothing else to be observed beyond that. Quiescence is because all the elaborations of the characteristics of conceptual thoughts such as existence and non-existence are pacified. For example, when a yogi examines with wisdom, if the nature of any object is unobtainable, then at that time, conceptual thoughts about objects will not arise. Conceptual thoughts about non-existent objects are also non-existent at that time. If someone sees some objects among a hundred objects, then conceptual thoughts about non-existent objects will arise due to the cessation. When a yogi examines with the eye of wisdom, if objects are unobtainable in the three times, then what is ceased that causes conceptual thoughts about non-existent objects to arise? Similarly, other conceptual thoughts will also not arise at that time, because the two conceptual thoughts of existence and non-existence pervade all conceptual thoughts, and because there is no pervader, there is also nothing to be pervaded. This is the supreme non-conceptual yoga, and the yogi who abides in it, because all conceptual thoughts have subsided, completely abandons the obscuration of afflictions and the obscuration of knowledge. For example, the obscuration of afflictions is the root, that is, the cause, of perversely clinging to unarisen and unceased objects as objects, etc. As the Blessed One taught in the sutras such as those explaining reliance on the two truths.
