If one practices to abandon distraction in order to place single-pointedness, then, the Madhyamikas say that like the moon in moving water, things move and are empty of nature, and those who say that conventional truth is momentary, their minds are not without distraction, because by the very certainty of each meaning, everything is single-pointed. If you say that, this is irrelevant, because it can be proven through experience that some minds are truly directed towards suchness, some are inverted, and others only hold actions and so on as supreme. Therefore, all minds that are directed away from the suchness of all things being without self are only called distraction, and abiding in the single-pointedness of suchness is called equipoise, why can't one just obtain these? Because one must certainly seek the one mind as the object of various behaviors. If you also say that before the time of manifesting suchness, it is possible for the grasping of "I" in one form to arise correctly, therefore that also exists in name. From where can the faults of "I" be exhausted? Or entering into habit becomes unobstructed, and makes all that should be obtained enter? If that exists, then after things have become like that, how can returning be established? By what means does that which is determined in that way by inference enter at that time? Because it has not become the nature of certainty, from beginningless time, because the habits of ignorance have controlled the mind, therefore only the name of non-veridical certainty enters. For that very reason, even if the path of seeing is attained, it depends on the path of meditation. For that very reason, apart from obtaining its fruit, the habit of this shore arises correctly only from ignorance. Therefore, first, for a while, extensively analyze all things with the divisions of the eighteen elements and so on, and after determining that "only these are all things," again continuously entrust the mind to that. In short, the faults of all samadhis are sixfold, namely: laziness, forgetting the object, and sinking. To counteract these, eight abandoning activities are needed.

Practice. For these, one should cultivate the eight antidotal activities. These are: faith, desire, effort, extreme pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity. Among these, the first four are antidotes to laziness. Thus, faith, which is characterized by great confidence in the qualities of samadhi, causes the yogi to generate great desire. From that comes effort. From that comes the ability of body and mind. From that, laziness is reversed. Mindfulness is the antidote to forgetting the object. Awareness is the antidote to sinking and excitement, because it shows the approach of sinking and excitement. When sinking and excitement are completely pacified, non-attention is a fault, so attention should be cultivated as an antidote. After sinking and excitement have subsided, when the mind naturally runs on its own, attention is a fault. Therefore, at that time, equanimity should be cultivated as an antidote. Through the cause of these eight antidotes, samadhi becomes workable, and thereby the qualities such as miracles are manifestly accomplished. Therefore, it is said in the sutras: "Cultivate the foot of miraculous power endowed with eight antidotal activities." The Blessed One also proclaimed this order of tranquility, as it is said: "How does the Bodhisattva dwell his mind within? Constantly dwelling, taming dwelling, near dwelling, taming, tranquilizing, extremely tranquilizing, focusing on one point, equally dwelling." Among them, dwelling is to bind the mind to the object of samadhi. Constantly dwelling is to dwell in the same way in constant operation, in order to prevent it from running elsewhere. Taming dwelling is that the mind is naturally shaken, and if it runs elsewhere, it knows and quickly gathers it. Near dwelling is that although the mind is stable, it is naturally rough, so it is freed from other things, making it subtle from above upwards, in order to dwell only in it. Taming is that the mind naturally likes to be distracted, making it like samadhi, that is, samadhi.
